PLACE OF OUR OWN, A: READING TO DIFFERENT AGES (TV)

Summary

The first of four episodes on this tape. One in this series of programs designed to help parents and child care providers as host Debi Gutierrez and guests share ideas, solutions to problems, and learning opportunities for children about to enter kindergarten. In this episode, Gutierrez, along with caregivers Darlene, Verdis and Consuelo, address how to read to different ages, assisted by Susan Baxter, early childhood education instructor. The discussion includes: the effectiveness of props -- like wooden figures -- to draw children into reading; choosing books that are fun to read and appeal to a wide range; adding music to reading; asking open-ended questions during reading; integrating reading into daily activities; and the success of having older children read to younger ones. In the final segment, pre-school teacher Alec Colchico suggests some interactive books, then makes props to accompany the story. This program is closed-captioned.
