A PLACE OF OUR OWN: CROSS-OVER PLAY (TV)
Summary
The first of four episodes on this tape. One in this
series of programs designed to help parents and child
care providers as host Debi Gutierrez and guests share
ideas, solutions to problems, and learning opportunities
for children about to enter kindergarten. In this
episode, Gutierrez and caregivers Jo-Ann, Mary, and
Sandy address how to handle "cross-over play,"
exemplified when boys play with dolls or girls play with
trucks. They're assisted by Greg Uba, children's
service coordinator for Connections With Children. The
discussion includes: what to do if a parent is upset by
their child playing with a toy or item typically
associated with the oppposite sex; providing
gender-neutral materials at the childcare center;
communicating with parents to help them understand
different ways in which kids can play; and organizing a
dressup day in which all children participate. Uba
stresses that life skills may be learned from cross-over
play: dressing dolls can help boys learn parenting
skills while girls focused on trucks may inspire them to
learn about car repair. In the final segment,
pre-school teacher Alec Colchico demonstrates how
childcare can make gender-neutral hats out of newspaper
to let them demonstrate job interests. This program is
