DANCING WITH THE STARS {SEASON ONE FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The season one finale in this live dance competition series in which celebrities partner with professional ballroom dancers and face off against each other. Host Tom Bergeron explains that the six stars have been whittled down to two, Kelly Monaco and John O'Hurley. Then, Bergeron and co-host Lisa Canning introduce the finalists, Monaco and her professional partner Alec Mazo and O'Hurley and his professional partner Charlotte Jorgensen. First, the finalists perform their best routine of the series and try to improve on it. O'Hurley explains that he needed help with lifts, so he enlisted "Dirty Dancing" star Patrick Swayze as a coach. Then, O'Hurley and Jorgensen dance the quickstep to Irving Berlin's "Let's Face the Music and Dance." Judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli score them a combined twenty-seven points out of a possible thirty. Next, Mazo talks about how a "wardrobe malfunction" diminished their last attempt at the samba. Then, Monaco and Mazo dance the samba to Enrique Iglesias's "Bailamos." The judges score them a combined twenty-five out of thirty. Next, the couples dance freestyle routines, their last chance to earn points in the contest. Then, footage details the "incredible journey" O'Hurley and Jorgensen have taken on the way to the grand finale. The two dance freestyle to The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited." The judges score them a combined twenty-seven out of thirty. Then, footage details Monaco and Mazo's "journey." They dance freestyle to Jennifer Lopez's "Let's Get Loud." The judges score them a perfect thirty out of thirty. Now, on the final leaderboard, Monaco/Mazo lead O'Hurley/Jorgensen by one point. Bergeron notes that viewer call-in votes will affect the final decision, however. Then, footage recaps the entire competition. Next, the show's other competitors dance their favorite performances: Trista Sutter and Louis van Amstel dance the rumba to Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's "Endless Love"; Evander Holyfield and Edyta Sliwinska dance the jive to Jackie Wilson's "Reet Petite"; Rachel Hunter and Jonathan Roberts dance the tango to Britney Spears's "Toxic"; and Joey McIntyre and Ashley DelGrosso dance the cha-cha-cha to Beyonce's "Crazy in Love." Then, Bergeron and Canning reveal the final tabulations and declare Monaco and Mazo the champions, presenting them with a trophy as they take the floor to Tina Turner's "Simply the Best."
