MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: 2006 WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: MEDIUM {TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL {23RD} {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Medium," a supernatural dramatic series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison DuBois, a wife and mother who struggles to make sense of her dreams and visions of death.
Barbara Dixon (vice-president and director, The Museum of Television & Radio/Los Angeles), offers opening remarks and introduces the panelists: creator Glen Gordon Caron; director Steven Robman; executive producer Rene Echevarria; executive producer Ronald Schwary; executive producer Steve Spark; and cast members Patricia Arquette (Allison DuBois), David Cubitt (Lee Scanlon), Miguel Sandoval (Manuel Devalos), Sofia Vassilieva (Ariel DuBois), Maria Lark (Bridgette DuBois), and Jake Weber (Joe DuBois). Executive producer Kelsey Grammer was scheduled to appear but did not attend. Caron then introduces a screening of the episode "Too Close to Call" which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see T:87520.)
After the screening, Dixon moderates a conversation with the panelists: Caron discusses how he came up with the idea for the show; how he tried to sell it to networks, how Grammer was involved, and the previous incarnation of the show: a talk show called "Oracles." Spark talks about the real-life medium Allison DuBois as well as the weird pitch sessions he had to attend with her. Arquette and fellow cast members discuss getting cast on the program. The show's writers then talk about how they generate story ideas and how often they talk to psychics to get those ideas. Caron closes by discussing possible future storylines.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: how hard it is for Arquette to portray DuBois; how one writes a mystery show; a recent episode about a miscarriage and how that was handled; the 3-D episode of the show; and if the show is "tawdry."
