MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: 2006 WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS {TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Everybody Hates Chris," a comedy series that takes place in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in 1982, the year Chris Rock turned 13. Los Angeles Museum vice president and director Barbara Dixon hosts the evening, and TV Guide bureau chief Craig Tomashoff moderates the discussion. He begins by introducing the panel: creators Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi, and cast members Tichina Arnold, Terry Crews, Imani Hakim, Tequan Richmond, and Tyler James Williams. Next, LeRoi introduces the episodes "Everybody Hates Chris" (Pilot) and "Everybody Hates a Part-Time Job," which are then screeened. Afterward, the panelists discuss such topics as: what made Rock want to create a sitcom; how the show ended up on UPN; the similarity between the show and Rock's real youth; how much Rock's television family is like Rock's real family; what NBA coach Phil Jackson taught Rock about having a good cast; the casting process; viewer feedback from controversial episodes; and whether young Chris will ever become a comedian on the show. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: whether Rock is frustrated by the lack of audience for his show; whether the show is mainly about racial issues; Rock's favorite medium; how a minority writer can break into the television business; music on the show; and what Rock's family thinks of the show.

(This tape includes the episodes Pilot (T:87569) and "Everybody Hates a Part-Time Job" (T:87570), which are part of the Museum's collection and may also be viewed separately.)
