MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: 2006 WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL: GREY'S ANATOMY {TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL {23RD}} {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Grey's Anatomy," the dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital.
Host Barbara Dixon (vice-president and director, The Museum of Television & Radio/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and introduces Christy Carpenter (executive vice-president and COO, The Museum of Television & Radio), who discusses the history of the festival and introduces William C. Paley. Dixon welcomes executive producer/creator/writer Shonda Rhimes to the stage, and Rhimes introduces her favorite episode to date, "Into You Like a Train," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see T:87694.)
After the screening, Dixon moderates the following panelists: Rhimes; executive producers Betsy Beers, Peter Horton, Krista Vernoff, James D. Parriott, and Mark Gordon; and cast members Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd), Katherine Heigl (Isobel "Izzie" Stevens), T.R. Knight (George O'Malley), Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang), James Pickens, Jr. (Richard Webber), Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Kate Walsh (Addison Montgomery-Shepherd), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), and Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke).
Rhimes discusses why she switched from writing films to working in television, as well as how she was tired of writing scripts involving young girls. Next, she discusses why she focused on surgeons and the casting process. Then, the cast members talks about how they got cast and what part of each actor's character is based on them.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: having a mainly female writing team; having husband-and-wife writing teams; the importance of Seattle as the show's location; where the show's medical stories originate; how bedroom scenes are filmed; the soundtrack and Rilo Kiley's theme song; and how one would audition to be on "Grey's Anatomy."
