TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {ROBIN WILLIAMS, BETTE MIDLER} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the last show to feature guests, the guests include actor/comedian Robin Williams and actress/singer Bette Midler. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: what the scene outside the studio is like; his true feelings as the show's run comes to an end; Vice President Dan Quayle's outcry concerning the material presented on "Murphy Brown"; and the political candidates' stand on various issues. Next Carson shows a famous clip from 1965 in which Ed Ames demonstrates how to throw a tomahawk. Carson's first guest, Robin Williams, brings out a rocking chair for Carson and then discusses the following topics: the riots in Los Angeles in the aftermath of the Rodney King verdict; how President George Bush places blame on everyone else but not himself; Williams's wife giving birth to a baby boy; why he is sporting blond hair; the work he does with Comic Relief; and how much money the organization has raised. Next, Bette Midler joins them and talks about the first time she auditioned for Carson's show and what happened to her outfit right before that audition. Midler then sings "You Made Me Love You" with lyrics adapted to the occasion and does an impromptu duet with Carson to "Here's That Rainy Day," one of Carson's favorite songs. Midler closes out her last show with Carson by singing "One For My Baby (And One More For the Road)," changing a few of the lines as a tribute to Carson. Includes commercials and promos.
