STEPHEN KING'S KINGDOM HOSPITAL: FINALE {EPISODE 13} {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The conclusion in this thirteen-part miniseries, developed by Stephen King and based on Lars von Trier's "The Kingdom," about ghostly happenings experienced by staff and visitors at a hospital in Lewiston, Maine. This episode begins with the narrator explaining that the end will come for Kingdom Hospital and everyone in it at 11:47 p.m. -- unless something is done to fix things. A completely mad Dr. Stegman finally figures out that Dr. Hook's "minions," Abel and Christa, have defaced his car and charges back into the hospital, meeting a frantic Richard on the way. Then, Dr. Stegman runs into a still furious Brenda, who scratches his face. Meanwhile, Lona, Hook, Sally, and the others prepare for the seance as Elmer is placed inside the dream machine. Sally discusses all the realizations she has come to in recent weeks. Then, Mary and Antubis arrive, scaring those that had never seen the anteater. Sally says that Antubis (actually the Egyptian spirit "Anubis," a name misunderstood by Mary and consequently dubbed Antubis) is a "gatekeeper" between life and death. Sally talks about how Mary has been forced to relive her death and the fire at Gates Falls Mill for the last 135 years. Dr. Stegman goes to speak with Johnny B. Goode, who's finally at his station, and finds out the whereabouts of Abel and Christa. Still brandishing a gun, he gets further confirmation from Sonny.
Meanwhile, Sally discusses how Mona helped her "understand" the dilemma at Kingdom. Sally discusses how she has learned that Mary was the "time girl" at the mill. As Abel, Christa, Otto, and Bobby join the seance group, Sally tells how the mill's owner, Ebenezer Gottreich, was a bad businessman who got greedy and then desperate before brainstorming a plan in the fall of 1869 to avert bankruptcy. He plotted with his brother, Klaus, who ran the mill infirmary as "a torture chamber," and his henchman Hagarty to burn the mill down with workers inside. Ebenezer saw them as "collateral damage" and, thus, another seventy-five dollars of "property loss" from the insurance company. Unfortunately, Mary witnessed the arson before she alerted her coworkers, who eventually perished nonetheless. Mary, however, is saved by the human incarnation of Antubis. That night, Mary slept in the woods before returning to the mill spot alone. Sally realizes that Antubis used Mary. Ebenezer is later interviewed by the press about the mill fire, stating that children who were smoking in the dye room accidentally started the blaze. Reporters voice their curiosity about the wherabouts of the still-missing Mary. Then, Mary approaches Klaus and Hagarty to return the latter man's hat. They demand that she never reveal what she saw back at the mill. Afterward, Hagarty wonders if Klaus is really able to eliminate Mary's memories with his lobotomy-like experimental procedures. Klaus thinks he can turn Mary into something that hey can mold as they please. Back in the present, Sally reveals that Klaus must have slowly killed Mary over a period of ten days with his "icepicks."
Then, once Mary has told all she can and Antubis has shown all he can, the two disappear and the hospital begins rumbling. Sally says that everyone needs to help as Louis administers a shot to each of them to encourage mass communal dreaming. Meanwhile, Dr. Stegman lurks outside the laboratory, listening. Louis gives Peter the first shot and soon Elmer is dreaming about being naked with Lona in the morgue. Dr. Stegman then crashes into the seance, prompting Antubis to bite off his hand. Then, the members of the seance begin to merge and search for Mary and Antubis. The floor between the seance circle opens up and a white light pops out the bones of the dead. The seance circle and Dr. Stegman find themselves in the Old Kingdom, where Dr. Stegman tries to attack Dr. Hook. Then, Dr. Stegman goes to sleep in a corner, where he dreams of taking a descending elevator to a deserted floor where he's trapped by Paul. Meanwhile, Elmer tries to buy a drink from a vending machine and instead gets a piece of Forday chalk, the very brand Peter uses. Peter draws on the wall with it, making an arrow that points the seance crew in the correct direction. They move on toward the mental institution lab where Egas Gottreich, the grandson of Klaus, conducted his experiments in the 1930s. At the same time Frank's headless corpse, a near-suicidal Earl, and other patients from the past wander around the Old Kingdom. Then, Sally leads everyone to the ruins of a meeting room, telling them that all the ghosts of Kingdom will never have peace if they don't succeed in their quest. Then, as the hospital's tremors grow stronger, Sally takes Dr. Hook and the others through the corridors of the Old Kingdom and back in time to the day of the big fire. Dr. Hook leads the crew as they try to aid the young mill workers.
Then, the time finally comes for Peter to return Antubis's "solid" by drawing a fire extinguisher with the chalk. In the present, Kingdom starts to rock off its foundation as its denizens try to escape. The chalk extinguisher becomes solid and Dr. Hook puts out the fire. Back in the present, Peter can stand and speak, fully healed. Now, the past has been altered and Mary has lived, becoming the founder of St. Mary's Kingdom Hospital. Dr. Hook and his pals note how the hospital has suffered no damage, the black voices of the dead have finally disappeared, and the ground is settled. However, as the group rejoices, Egas, Paul, and Dr. Stegman (with his missing hand restored) look on, quietly beginning to plot their revenge. Includes commercials.
