TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {LEE GRANT, BERT CONVY, CHARLES NELSON REILLY, JAY PRESSON ALLEN} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include actress Lee Grant, game show host and performer Bert Convy, actor Charles Nelson Reilly, and screenwriter and novelist Jay Presson Allen. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: President Gerald Ford being in Los Angeles for a $250-a-plate dinner; Ronald Reagan "not" being a candidate for president; the Federal Trade Commission's recent ruling on misleading sleep aid commercials; presidential candidate Jimmy Carter's problem with Secret Service protection in more rural communities; and a Chinese restaurant in California accused of serving bear meat. In the next segment, announcer Ed McMahon assists as Carson appears as "Carnac the Magnificent," the kooky psychic who can ascertain what is contained inside hermetically-sealed envelopes. Carson's first guest, Convy, joins him to touch on such topics as: the rainy weather in Los Angeles and how locals are unable to deal with it; why no one in Los Angeles owns a rake; whether he goes trick-or-treating with his kids; his children having pet mice and turtles; and "signs" that your television show has been canceled. Then, Convy performs "Feelings." Afterward, Convy discusses singing live (as opposed to lip-syncing) and his traveling backup singers. Carson's second guest, Grant, joins him to touch on such topics as: the "minor pain" over her canceled television series "Fay"; her behavior on "The Tonight Show" in regards to "Fay" being canceled; her upcoming film shoot in Barcelona for "The Voyage"; what she does with her pets while out of town; and her idiosyncratic cat Melvin, who once jumped from a high window. Carson's third guest, Reilly, joins him to touch on such topics as: why he wore a tuxedo to talk with Carson; a favorite story about his deceased dog Rose; and pet cemeteries in Los Angeles. Carson's final guest, Allen, joins him to touch on such topics as: once having had a pet snake named Barry; traveling with Barry in her purse; her new book "Just Tell Me What You Want"; how often her unusual first name leads to gender confusion; the lament that there are "no good parts for women'" in film; whether she would rather work with men or women; her life in Connecticut; and whether Los Angeles is a "cultural vacuum." Also, McMahon does an in-studio commercial for Macleans Fluoride toothpaste. Includes commercials.
