JEAN MOULIN: UNE AFFAIRE FRANCAISE {JEAN MOULIN: A HERO'S DESTINY} {PT. 1 OF 2} {FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES} {2003 INTERNATIONAL EMMY NOMINEE} (TV)

Summary

Part one of this two-part miniseries that recreates the final years of Jean Moulin, the French civil servant who became a resistance leader in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. The film begins in present-day France, where a powerful storm strikes down a tree limb, spurring Granny Alice to recount the significance of the tree to her grandson; Alice's recollections bring the story back to June 1940, when German troops requisitioned her grandmother's house and executed her grandmother before her eyes, in front of the stricken tree. Thus Alice began her journey, walking for miles on end with others fleeing the advancing Germans, until she collapsed, bringing her to the attention Jean Moulin, the local prefect. After Moulin drops Alice at a hospital in Chartres, Moulin meets with his friend Mahres, with whom he discusses his decision to gather forces and fight back against the Nazis. When he goes back to Chartres for Alice, he learns that she's been evacuated by the German army. During that summer, the Germans sweep through Paris and the rest of France. In Chartres, Moulin defies a Nazi general's orders to sign a statement blaming French Senegalese troops for the massacre of French civilians; he is tortured and witnesses firsthand the brutality of the Nazi regime. His experiences lead Moulin to talk to some compatriots about organizing like-minded individuals interested in resisting the Germans; in September 1941, Moulin meets with French Army officials in Lisbon and secures a meeting with General Charles de Gaulle, in exile in London. De Gaulle agrees to Moulin's plan to lead the resistance from his headquarters in London, with Moulin as his representative in France. Moulin shares these plans with leaders of two main resistance groups in Marseilles; the leaders resent Moulin's assumption of power but begrudgingly assent to de Gaulle's will. Moulin's girlfriend Gilberte also resents Moulin, who has put his commitment to fighting the Germans above his commitment to their relationship. In February 1942, Moulin acquires a staff, permanent offices, and soon after unites the three main resistance groups into one body, the Secret Army; in the autumn of 1942 General Delestraint is appointed leader of the Secret Army, just in time for the Gestapo's entry into Lyon, under the leadership of Klaus Barbie. The unity of the resistance movement is tested when Moulin discovers one leader of an old faction hoarding weapons meant for the Secret Army. Alice comes back into Moulin's life when her work as low-level pamphleteer and messenger for the resistance brings her to his office. Later, her friends are executed during a German raid on a coffee shop. Alice is arrested, but is saved from execution by Moulin, who plans her escape and takes her to safety.
