Summary
The first of two parts on this tape. Part one of this three-part documentary about World War II's Battle of Stalingrad, waged between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany from 1942-1943. The story is told through newsreel and archival footage; photographs; original radio broadcasts featuring Adolf Hitler and other high-ranking Nazis; letters from the battlefield; animated graphics; Soviet propaganda film clips; and Nazi propaganda film clips. It also features first-person accounts from the following people: soldiers from Germany's 6th Army, the division decimated at Stalingrad; German and Soviet doctors and nurses who treated casualties from both sides; Soviet Red Army soldiers who fought in Stalingrad; Stalingrad civilians who survived the battle; officers and other soldiers who witnessed planning and decision making at German headquarters in Stalingrad and Germany; and the wives and children of German officers who served at Stalingrad. This part begins with an overview of the events of the Battle of Stalingrad, then proceeds to cover in detail the following topics: the build-up to the battle; German treatment of Soviet civilians on their approach to Stalingrad; the military and personal reasons Hitler set his sights on Stalingrad in the summer of 1942; the early days of Germany's attack on the city; the role of Soviet Red Army snipers in turning the tide on the German occupiers; and the increasing awareness on the part of the German soldiers and commanders at the eastern front that the 6th Army's campaign was ill-footed and, as winter approached, ill-fated. Commentators include 6th Army soldiers Eberhard Manthey, Gerhard Munch, Heinz Graf Vitzthum, Heinz Thomas, Hanz Rostewitz, Ferdinand Wiedemeier, Richard Beuerle, Josef Zrenner, Helmut Walz, Gunther Schroeder, and Hans Mroczinski; pilots Erich Mithe and Theo Rottger; German officers Gerhard Dengler, Albrecht Appelt, Hans-Erdmann Schoenbeck, Winrich Behr, Wolf-Dietrich von Schenkzy Tautenberg, and Bernd Freytag Von Loringhoven; headquarters staff Alfons Schulz and Franz Halder; German medic Dr. Horst Rocholl; Red Army soldiers Garja Chocholow, Raissa Galtshenko, Boris Stepanov, Alexandr Rakizidj; Red Army nurse Marija Rochlina; Russian civilians Nikolai Orlov, Anna Protas, and Lidia Arazkia; and Luzia Kollak, a German soldier's wife.
