Summary
Part one of this two-part miniseries, written by historian Peter Englund, about an ambitious young cryptographer who becomes a spy in 1950s Sweden and embarks on a mission to uncover a double agent code-named "Ramona." This drama begins as Per Ulrik Kernell reaches a breakthrough in his analysis of secret Russian codes and is rewarded with a position in a Swedish espionage service, T-Kontoret, an agency kept secret from the public due to the nation's official non-alignment during the first years of the Cold War. Already out of his element as an academic-turned-spy, Kernell's task is made more difficult by the animosity of his war-hardened partner Johansson, and the moralistic outbursts of his ambitious journalist fiancee, Elisabet, who wants to write an expose on unaligned Sweden's use of T-Kontoret to facilitate NATO operations. Kernell's only ally, it seems, is his coworker Sillen, who schools Kernell on spy terminology and practices. When Kernell and Johansson are unable to find evidence indicting the suspected double agents, they put into play a "barium test" constructed to flush out the double agent. At the last minute, Johansson enlists Kernell to take his place on a dangerous mission related to the test, in which he must accompany an Estonian operative, Leo, into Russian-occupied Estonia. The mission -- and Kernell's life -- are endangered when the Russians ambush Kernell's party as they reach the Estonian coast.
