Summary
This tape contains highlights from the 1977 to 1986
broadcasts of the Antoinette Perry Awards for
outstanding work in the Broadway Theater, produced
under the leadership of distinguished television
producer Alexander H. Cohen. The following excerpts are
included: from the 1977 Tony Awards ceremony, a
performance of "I Love My Wife," "Married Couple Seeks
Married Couple," and "Hey There, Good Times" featuring
"I Love My Wife" cast members Lenny Baker, Joanna
Gleason, James Naughton, and Ilene Graff; from 1978's
broadcast, Robert Guillaume introduces performances
from "Dancin'," "The Twentieth Century" (featuring Judy
Kaye, Imogene Coca, John Cullum and Kevin Kline), and
"Eubie" (featuring Maurice and Gregory Hines); from the
1979 show, Dorothy Loudon performs "Fifty Percent"
from "Ballroom"; and from 1980, Jason Robards and Mary
Tyler Moore introduce "Come Follow the Band" from
"Barnum," Moore introduces "Doin' the Hollywood
Production Code" from "A Day in Hollywood, A Night in
the Ukraine," and Robards presents Ann Miller and Mickey
Rooney performing "A McHugh Medley" from "Sugar
Babies." As part of a retrospective during the 1981
broadcast, Andrea McArdle performs "Tommorow" from
1977's "Annie," Nell Carter sings "Honeysuckle Rose"
from 1978's "Ain't Misbehavin'," Angela Lansbury
performs "By the Sea" from 1979's "Sweeney Todd," and
Patti LuPone performs "New Argentina" from 1980's
"Evita"; in the 1982 ceremony, Tony Randall introduces
Jennifer Holliday's performance of "And I'm Telling You
I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls," featuring fellow cast
members Deborah Burrell, Obba Babatunde, Ben
Harney, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine and Cleavant
Davis; also in 1982, Randall introduces "Be Italian"
from the musical "Nine"; the clip from 1983 features
Tommy Tune, Twiggy and company performing a dance
number from "My One and Only"; in 1984, Beth Fowler,
Catherine Cox and Liz Callaway sing "I Want it All" from
"Baby," and Gene Barry, George Hearn and company
perform "We Are What We Are/I Am What I Am" from "La
Cage Aux Folles"; in 1985, Daniel Jenkins, Ron
Richardson and company sing "Muddy Water" and "A River
in the Rain" from "Big River"; and in 1986, the company
of "Big Deal" performs "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar,"
and Bea Arthur introduces a performance by the
company of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."
