MYSTERY!: PRIME SUSPECT 3: EPISODE 3 (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces part three of this four-part program, set in contemporary London, in which recently transferred Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison -- now on the Soho vice squad -- investigates a teenager's murder and discovers a sinister link to the police. As the episode opens, Tennison learns that nothing relevant has been pulled from journalist Jessica Smithy's tape recordings of Connie Jenkins. However, Bill Otley brings her some possibly scandalous information on Edward Parker Jones's past. Later, when discussing gay bars in the area, much to the rest of the department's astonishment, Ray Hebdon reveals that he's a homosexual. Tennison is now interested in Hebdon looking into an exclusive gay bar, the Bowery, that might be frequented by closeted gay police officers. Eventually, Tennison reveals to Superintendent Halliday that she thinks Connie was murdered to cover up a pedophile ring he was set to reveal. Meanwhile, Hebdon begins receiving a chilly reception from his fellow officers. Later, Tennison tracks down prime suspect James Jackson -- and a young girl he is escorting -- to a parking garage and sets a tail on him. Eventually, Otley and Larry Hall track him down and accuse him of holding a minor against her will. There, they also find Vera Reynolds and a very ill Billy Matthews. Jackson threatens Reynolds before escaping out the door. Meanwhile, Tennison speaks with Anthony Field, a man who once accused an "Edward Parker" of molesting him as a youth. He also reveals what a police officer did to prevent him from filing charges, concluding that he won't testify. Afterward, Tennison meets with her predecessor, Chief Inspector David Lyall, who discusses the potential for a police leak and why he's not interested in ruffling any feathers in uncovering the pedophile ring. That night, Hebdon and his fellow officers go to the drag club to survey the scene, causing Reynolds to flee. On the run, Reynolds is accosted by a furious Jackson. Jackson tracks down Detective Sergeant Richard Haskons and Detective Chief Lillie at the club -- both of whom are undercover in drag -- and a fight ensues before Jackson is apprehended. Meanwhile, Otley goes to speak to Alan Thorpe and other homeless youths. Thorpe helps him locate a house where he believes pedophile activity may have occurred -- Assistant Deputy Commissioner John Kennington's home. Then, Tennison goes to speak with Jason Baldwin, a man who had once accused Parker Jones of molesting him. Afterward, Baldwin attempts suicide. Then, Tennison cajoles Dalton into revealing why he has been assigned to such a seemingly low-priority case -- he's been ordered by Chiswick to monitor things and make sure that Tennison doesn't trace matters back to Kennington. Again, Tennison goes to speak with Margaret Speel, thinking she has been hiding some information about Parker Jones. Later, a furious Chiswick chastises Haskons, Lillie, and Hebdon for their involvement in the cabaret kerfuffle. Meanwhile, Tennison and Dalton finally meet with Kennington, inquiring about his recent resignation and whether he recollects Jenkins, Parker Jones, or any other principals in the investigation. A frazzled Kennington quickly strong-arms her out of his house. Later, Dalton reveals to Tennison how frightened he continues to be that he may have contracted AIDS. Finally, Otley brings Parker Jones into the station against Tennison's wishes. Tennison is infuriated -- which amuses Otley.
