MASTERPIECE THEATRE: MIDDLEMARCH {EPISODE 4} (TV)

Summary

One in this ongoing series of dramas presented under the umbrella of "Masterpiece Theatre." This program presents part four of a six-part adaptation of George Eliot's "Middlemarch," a Victorian novel of idealism, passion, love, disappointment, folly, and hope. First, Russell Baker introduces the presentation. In this part, candidates make their speeches for parliment, including Arthur Brooke who -- amusingly enough -- runs as a reform candidate. Meanwhile, Dorothea tries to get on with her life after Edward Casaubon's death, speaking of her grief to Dr. Lydgate. James Chettam is rankled to see that Casaubon's will has a provision that will not allow Dorothea to keep Lowick if she ever marries Will Ladislaw. Dorothea returns to Lowick to go through Casaubon's papers and begin taking charge of her life. Meanwhile, Lydgate continues struggling with expenses in his marriage to Rosamond, now pregnant. One day, Lydgate's cousin, Captain Lydgate, pays a visit, picking up on his friendship with Rosamond from their previous meeting. Dorothea begins spending time with Rev. Camden Farebrother, offering him a chance to live at Lowick, which he accepts. One day, Fred Vincy returns to Middlemarch from a stint at Oxford University, begrudgingly deciding to become a clergyman, and continuing to be a source of amusement to the locals, including his sister. Lydgate finds contempt in his cousin's behavior and in the way Rosamond treats the Captain. One day, a sherry-sloshed Arthur gives a muddled reform speech to the townspeople and is roundly heckled. Meanwhile, Joshua Rigg sells Stone Court to Nicholas Bulstrode. Later, Arthur speaks with Ladislaw, "shockingly" revealing that he's given up his political ambitions, while also telling Ladislaw that he's selling The Pioneer. Ladislaw is angered that Arthur thinks he should move on, and stresses that he won't be leaving Middlemarch anytime soon. One day, Rosamond goes riding with the Captain and upsets her husband, who believes that such an activity is too risky for a pregnant woman. Meanwhile, a disillusioned Arthur decides to go to Paris. Later, Dorothea receives a visit from Ladislaw, who reveals that he intends to go to London to pursue a legal career. While pouring out their feelings to each other, Chettam arrives, shocked to see Ladislaw, thinking his appearance inappropriate. One night, Bulstrode's old acquaintance John Raffles mysteriously arrives at his house, having just returned from America. Raffles attempts to blackmail Bulstrode over his "ill-gotten gains." Finally, Rosamond goes riding with Captain Lydgate yet again -- defying her husband -- and when her horse shies, she faints, then miscarries.
