CHANNEL 7 SPECIAL REPORT: TARGET IRAQ/TODAY
TONIGHT {OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM} (TV)
Summary
This tape contains a Special Report from Australia's Channel 7 News covering Operation Iraqi Freedom, followed by the nightly current affairs program "Today Tonight." In the "Channel 7 News Special Report," anchors Chris Bath and David Johnston review the "main points" of the day's news. Mitchell Catlin reports on the first night of the "Shock and Awe" bombing campaign; his report includes footage of bombing in Baghdad, and statements by U.S. President George W. Bush, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, and Tom Ridge of the U.S. Homeland Security Department. Embedded reporter Colin Brazier reports on the advances of the U.S. 7th Cavalry, with whom he travels towards Baghdad. Mike McCarthy reports from Kuwait City, where citizens, journalists and soldiers prepare for possible retaliation by Iraq. The program shows a short report from Geof Parry in Kuwait during which the air raid sirens sound and he puts on his gas mask. Tim Versteegen reports from London on British reactions to the deaths of British soldiers, the possible causes of the helicopter crash that killed them, and the state of the anti-war movement in Britain following those casualties and the beginning of the "Shock and Awe" bombing of Baghdad. The program shows footage from NBC News in which embedded reporter Kerry Sanders talks about wearing protective masks and suits and reports on the possible downing of a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter and fires spotted near the Ar-Ramaylah oil fields. Channel 7 investment advisor Kylie Harding reports on the war's effect on international financial markets. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports on the questions of authenticity surrounding Hussein's videotaped statement. The program presents a CNN piece composed of excerpts from embedded CNN journalists' reports. Britain's Sky News reporter Alex Rossi's report on the "Shock and Awe" campaign follows, and is cut short as "Today Tonight" begins its broadcast. This episode of "Today Tonight" consists of three segments. In the first segment, Anchor Naomi Robson interviews reporter David Richardson about the atmosphere and activity in Kuwait City, after which the program airs his report on the same topic. Ian McPhedron, in Baghdad, reports on conditions and activity there during the Coalition's "Operation Shock and Awe" air-strikes. U.S. correspondent Glenn Connolly talks to terrorism expert Mark Burgess about the advantages the Coalition forces have over Iraqi troops, the possibility that Hussein might use chemical weapons against the Coalition and civilians, and the question of Hussein's health and whereabouts. The second segment, about cut-price retail outlets in Australia, features shopping advisor Pamm Durkin. In the third segment, the program takes a look at problems experienced by Lotto winners; Lotto winner Janelle Willey talks about the social and financial difficulties she's faced since her win and Andrew Walton from the Lotto Commission gives advice to would-be Lotto winners. Includes commercials.
