FRONTLINE: SHATTERED DREAMS OF PEACE: THE ROAD FROM OSLO {TWENTIETH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this documentary series. This edition examines the endless cycles of hope and violence that have marked the Israeli-Palestinian peace process since the 1993 Oslo accords were signed on the White House lawn. Shortly afterward, Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Violence follows in 1995 when Rabin is assassinated by a Jewish extremist and the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas gains power in the Occupied Territories. Suicide bombings organized by Hamas leaders begin a reign of terror in Israel, with Peres and Arafat both coming under attack from their own people. After Benjamin Netanyahu defeats Peres in Israel's subsequent election, he moves to make changes to the Oslo accords. President Bill Clinton then holds a summit at Camp David to work out a peace agreement between Netanyahu and Arafat. Though one is signed, neither leader carries out his pledges. After the Knesset turns against Netanyahu, Ehud Barak becomes Israel's fourteenth prime minister. Barak and Arafat make their own terms for peace, which once again are put in jeopardy by suicide bombings. At a 2000 summit with Clinton, the two address the fate of Jerusalem, but can't come to terms on who should maintain the Temple Mount. Violence between Israelis and Palestinians erupts when the Likud party's Ariel Sharon visits the Temple Mount, resulting in an intifadah. Barak resigns and Sharon becomes the next prime minister. By spring 2002, all political negotiations stop and violence increases. Israeli tanks enter Arafat's compound in Ramallah and hold him captive for 31 days. As Israeli forces pull back, the entire peace process is in ruins, though some still voice hopes for a better future. This program is closed-captioned.
