GET REAL: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot in this dramatic series about the domestic problems of the dysfunctional Green family of San Francisco. The episode begins with Mary and David in the midst of sex. Afterward, their children Kenny, Meghan, and Cameron bring them breakfast in bed. However, that ideal life proves just a dream as Mary awakens to a less happy situation, married to the ever-distracted Mitch and mother of three troubled teens. Kenny can't recall a time that his parents didn't start the day by fighting. Honor student Meghan is glad the house is being remodeled so she doesn't have to hear the fighting. She reveals she has a surprise for her parents that they won't like. Mary worries about Meghan going off to college and exiting her life. Later, Mary tries to awaken Cameron, finding him in bed with girlfriend Gaby. Then, Meghan informs her mother that she was named valedictorian. Mary tries to talk to Cameron about Gaby sleeping in the house with him and is blown off. At work, Mitch speaks with colleague David about his sex life. At school, Kenny discusses his family with best buddy Victor Castillo, as well as his pursuit of dream girl Jane Cohen. Then, Kenny gets attacked by school bully Frank Ortiz. Frank challenges him to a fight after school. Meanwhile, Mary discusses marriage with her mother Elizabeth, who recently moved into the Greens' home following the death of her husband. Later, Mary tries to speak with Mitch about how their relationship has gone sour. Mitch suggests a romantic dinner for the next evening. Meanwhile, Kenny goes to Cameron for some fighting advice and he suggests a move Paul Newman pulls off in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." He also notes that Gaby is history. The next day, Frank arrives for the fight with Kenny, who tries Cameron's recommendation before getting punched in the face. Meanwhile, Meghan is depressed, noting that her parents got married when Mary became pregnant with her. Mary waits for Mitch to return for their romantic evening, but instead he brings home David, who has just been thrown out by his wife Jennifer. Then, David's girlfriend, L.A. Lakers dancer Niko, arrives at the Green home. During dinner, Jennifer shows up and causes a scene. Mary is upset at how her romantic plans were so easily ruined. The next day, Kenny finally gets up the courage to phone Jane and ask her out for a lunch date, though she doesn't recognize the caller's voice. Walking toward Jane outside school, Kenny sees Frank with a broken nose, and realizes that Cameron took revenge on him. Minutes later, Kenny also realizes that Jane is Cameron's latest squeeze. That night, the Greens have a special dinner for Meghan and give her presents. Meghan then reveals that she turned down the chance to attend Berkeley and no longer wants to go to any college. Her parents are shocked by their daughter's decision. Later, Cameron and Jane go out on a date and Mitch begins drinking in the dark. Mitch tells Mary that Meghan's choice is due to the fact that Mary pushes her so much. They get into a fight, which is interrupted by a phone call informing them that Cameron got into a car accident. The Greens rush to the hospital to find Cameron only slightly injured. That evening, Mary and Mitch make a tentative truce. Later, Mary gets some advice from her mother about Meghan, followed by Mary speaking with Meghan about her "bombshell." Finally, Kenny meets an attractive young neighbor, Rebecca Peabody, as Meghan takes off on a motorcycle with new boyfriend Brad. Commercials deleted.
