WNBA PLAYOFFS, 1998: CLEVELAND ROCKERS VS. MERCURY, GAME ONE (TV)
Summary
Live coverage of this 1999 WNBA semi-final playoff game between the Cleveland Rockers and the Phoenix Mercury. In the ten minute pre-game broadcast, Lifetime network commentators Reggie Miller, Meghan Pattyson and Michele Tafoya analyze the teams and discuss the upcoming game. Presenter Maura Driscoll previews the "Lee Jeans Halftime Report" and introduces guests Fran Harris and Mary Murphy. Courtside reporter Summer Sanders adds pre-game commentary. Miller, Pattyson and Tafoya call the game and NBC WNBA analyst Ann Meyers reports on the outcome of the semi-final match between the Charlotte Sting and the Houston Comets. At halftime, the Mercury lead the Rockers 37-31. Maura Driscoll presents the "Lee Jeans Halftime Report," which includes a review of the 1998 WNBA season's highlights and a debate between Harris and Murphy on the dominance of championship favorite, the Houston Comets.
Though ahead in the second half by as many as twelve points, a series of fouls brings the Mercury's lead down to six points with 3:00 left; the lead is brought back to ten points in the final three minutes through a series of excellent shots by Mercury player Jennifer Gillom and three Rockers turnovers (they have a total of 18 for the game), giving the Mercury a 78-68 victory over the Rockers. With 21 points, 5 rebounds and an 8/18 field goal ratio, Jennifer Gillom is named the Regal by Buick Player of the Game. Gillom talks to courtside reporter Summer Sanders about the team's victory and her performance. Maura Driscoll interviews Mercury player Michelle Timms about the team's strategy for the next game. Miller, Pattyson, and Tafoya recap the game. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
