
PREMIO LO NUESTRO A LA MUSICA LATINA 2002 {'LO NUESTRO' LATIN MUSIC AWARDS} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
The fourteenth edition (2002) of this yearly music awards presentation program which honors Latin music achievements in the United States. This year's program, broadcast live from the James L. Knight Convention Center in Miami, is co-hosted by popular Spanish-language television figures Fernando Arau and Marco Antonio Regil. This year awards are given in the categories of Pop, Tropical, Regional Mexican, Rock, Music Video, and People's Choice. Three awards for excellence, given to artists for their lifetime contribution to Latin music, are also presented. The program opens with Paulina Rubio's performance of "Y yo sigo aqu’," then co-hosts Marco Antonio Regil and Fernando Arau introduce the evening. Presentations and performances in this segment include the following: actors Jorge Enrique Abello and Ana Mar’a Orozco present the award for best album, Pop, to "Abr‡zame muy fuerte" by Juan Gabriel; Jessie Morales and Graciela Beltr‡n present the award for best album, Regional Mexican, to "Despreciado" by Lupillo Rivera; Ana Layevska and Valentino Lanus present the award for best salsa interpretation, Tropical, to Gilberto Santa Rosa; the two hosts take the stage to thank the radio programmers that make the awards possible and the accounting firm Arthur Anderson, represented by Michael Stein; Victor Noriega and Pilar Montenegro present the award for best norte–a interpretation, Regional Mexican, to Palomo; Lupillo Rivera performs "Despreciado"; in a comic sketch, Fernando Arau, dressed as the superhero SuperCompadre, does battle with a figure that bears a striking resemblance to Fidel Castro; Jorge Aravena and Danna Garc’a present the award for best male artist, Tropical, to Gilberto Santa Rosa; Odalys Garc’a and Jorge Salinas present the award for best new artist, Regional Mexican, to Jessie Morales "El Original de la Sierra"; Olga Ta–—n performs "Como olvidar"; host Arau introduces a video tribute to JosŽ JosŽ, then the latter's son, JosŽ Joel, performs a medley of his hits, including "Gavil‡n o paloma," "Lo pasado pasado," and "El triste"; JosŽ Joel then presents his father with the award for excellence. Four awards are presented in quick succession by on-screen shots: best tejana interpretation, Regional Mexican, goes to Intocable; best interpretation, Rock, goes to La Ley; best duo or group, Tropical, goes to Ilegales; and the Internet People's Choice award, Regional Mexican, goes to Thal’a; Fato and Carolina La— present the award for best ranchera interpretation, Regional Mexican, to Pepe Aguilar; Jessica Fox and Guillermo Sauceda present the award for best song, Tropical, to Olga Ta–—n for "Como olvidar," composed by Jorge Luis Piloto and Gustavo Arenas, and produced by Humberto Gatica, Manuel Tejada, Angel "Cuco" Pe–a, and Eric Figueroa; and A. B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia Kings perform "Shh!"
Arau and Regil do a sketch with magician Alan Chamo; actors Juan Pablo Gamboa and Nailea Norvind present the award for best group or duo, Regional Mexican, to Palomo; the band Bryndis performs "Vas a sufrir"; Aura Cristina Geithner and Jorge Luis Pila present the award for best male artist, Pop, to Cristian Castro; four awards are announced via screen shot: best female artist, Regional Mexican, goes to Thal’a; best group or duo, Pop, goes to OV7; best album, Rock, goes to "MTV Unplugged: La Ley"; and best new artist, Tropical, goes to Huey Dunbar; Alexandre Pires performs "Usted se me llev— la vida"; Vladimir Dotel of the band Ilegales and Eugenia Cauduro present the award for best male artist, Regional Mexican, to Lupillo Rivera; Anah’ and Huey Dunbar present the award for best female artist, Tropical, to Olga Ta–—n; actors Sof’a Vergara and Christian de la Fuente present the Internet People's Choice Award, determined by the general public on the Univision.com website, in two categories -- Pop goes to Shakira, who accepts via satellite from New York, and Tropical goes to Olga Ta–—n; Enrique Iglesias performs "HŽroe" and "Escape" (Spanish version); Charytin and Lili EstŽfan present the award for best music video to Enrique Iglesias for his "HŽroe"; host Regil does a comic sketch; Jaime Camil and Melina Le—n present the award for best song, Pop, to "Abr‡zame muy fuerte" performed and composed by Juan Gabriel, and produced by Eduardo Magallanes; Palomo performs "No me conoces aœn"; four awards are announced via screen shot: best grupera interpretation, Regional Mexican, goes to Los Temerarios; best banda interpretation, Regional Mexican, goes to Banda El Recodo; best traditional interpretation, Tropical, goes to Alquimia; and best merengue interpretation, Tropical, goes to Olga Ta–—n; Gilberto Santa Rosa performs "La agarro bajando," then Milly Quezada presents him with a special award for excellence.
Marisol Santacruz and Miguel de Le—n present the award for best new artist, Pop, to Eduardo Ver‡stegui; Pepe Aguilar performs "Me vas a extra–ar"; two members of the group Fulanito present the award for best album, Tropical, to "Yo por t’" by Olga Ta–—n; Alfonso "Poncho" Liz‡rraga and Joel Liz‡rraga of Banda El Recodo, along with Ruddy Rodr’guez, present the award for best song, Regional Mexican, to "No me conoces aœn" by Palomo, produced by Germ‡n Ch‡vez and Patricia Ch‡vez, and composed by Flor Ivonne Quezada and Alan Trigo (Patricia Ch‡vez and Flor Ivonne Quezada accept the award on stage with the band); Shalim and Tommy Torres present the award for best female artist, Pop, to Paulina Rubio; AngŽlica Mar’a presents Juan Gabriel with an award for excellence for his 30-year career, then he performs "Debo hacerlo."
