PREMIO LO NUESTRO A LA MUSICA LATINA 1990 {'LO NUESTRO' LATIN MUSIC AWARDS} {SPANISH} (TV)
Summary
The second edition (1990) of this annual music awards presentation program which honors Latin music achievements in the United States. The awards, presented by Univisión and Billboard Magazine, are determined from nominees selected from the top artists on Billboard radio and sales charts, and chosen by producers, distributors, and radio programmers throughout the United States. This year's program, presented live from Miami, Florida and hosted by Lucy Pereda and Antonio Vodanovic, gives awards in the categories of Pop/Ballad, Tropical/Salsa, and Regional Mexican, as well as awards to the best producer of the year, best composer of the year, and best crossover artist; this year also includes the premiere of the program's "excellence" award which recognizes the outstanding artistic achievement of a musical figure over the years.
The program opens with a dance production number, choreographed by Joey Chevres, to a medley of Latin hits. The hosts then give a special welcome to the different regions broadcasting the awards internationally, including Spain, Latin America, and the Caribbean; they also recognize accountants Francis Fernández and Richard García, who are present to verify the validity of the awards. Presentations and performances in this segment include the following: Ana Gabriel and Braulio present the first award, for best band in the category of Pop/Ballad, to Kaoma; Amanda Miguel and Diego Verdaguer perform (song unidentified); Chayanne and Andrea del Boca, present the award for best band, Regional Mexican, to Bronco; the band Los Temerarios performs "Tu infame engaño"; Ricardo Montaner and Luis Enrique present the award for best new artist, Pop/Ballad, to the band Kaoma, and the award for band of the year, Tropical/Salsa, to El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico; Myriam Hernández sings "El hombre que yo amo"; Maria Marta Serra Lima and Miguel Mateos present the award for best new artist, Regional Mexican, to Los Temerarios; Luis Enrique sings "Lo que pasó entre tu y yo"; Yolanda del Río and Fito Olivares present the award for best new artist of the year, Tropical/Salsa, to the trio Chantelle; Los Yonics perform (song title not given); former Dœo Dinámico singer Ramón Arcusa presents the award for best composer of the year to Juan Carlos Calderón for "La incondicional"; Franco de Vita sings "Luis"; Jorge Fonseca performs his "Mami yo te quiero," which demonstrates, according to the hosts in their introduction, how Latin artists in the United States maintain their roots in their native countries and cultures while being influenced by other musical forms like rap; the hosts present the award for best female artist, Pop/Ballad, to Ana Gabriel; Ricardo Montaner sings "Me va a extrañar"; Hansel and Tommy Olivencia present the next two awards, presenting artist of the year in the Regional Mexican category to Vicente Fernández, and artist of the year in the Tropical/Salsa category to Luis Enrique.
Amanda Miguel and Diego Verdaguer present the award for the best male artist of the year in the Pop/Ballad category to Chayanne; the female trio Chantelle and the Mariachi Cobre both perform (songs unidentified); Yolanda del Río performs "Válgame dios"; host Vodanovic recognizes the program's orchestra and conductor William Sánchez; Gloria Estefan receives the award presented by Willy Chirino for the best "crossover" artist of the year and collects her award with her husband Emilio Estefan; Miguel Mateos performs (song unidentified); Randy and Esteban Carrillo from the group Mariachi Cobre present the award for best album of the year, Regional Mexican, to Bronco for their album "Un golpe más"; David Pabón sings "Aquel viejo motel"; Laura Flores and Franco de Vita present the award for best album of the year, Pop/Ballad, to Ana Gabriel for "Tierra de nadie"; Bronco performs the title track from their award-winning album "Un golpe más." In a special segment, Joaquín Blaya, president of Univisión, and Jimmy Schmitt, spokesperson for Billboard, present Celia Cruz with the first "excellence" award which recognizes the outstanding artistic achievement of a musical figure over the years; a presentation which surveys Celia Cruz's artistic career, including images and footage of her in performance, precedes the award presentation.
The award presentations and performances continue: the trio Chantelle presents the award for the best album of the year, Tropical/Salsa, to Luis Enrique for "Mi mundo"; Juan Carlos Calderón and Emilio Estefan give the award for the best producer of the year to Homero Hernández for "Un golpe más"; Ana Gabriel sings "Simplemente amigos"; José Javier Solís and Myriam Hernández present the award for best song of the year, Tropical/Salsa, to Luis Enrique for "Lo que pasó entre tœ y yo"; La Mafia performs "Me estoy volviendo loco"; Valeria Lynch and Teresa Guerra present Vicente Fernández the award for best song, Regional Mexican, for his "Por tu maldito amor"; and "crossover" artist Chayanne sings "Simon Says." Andrea del Boca and Braulio present the final award of the evening for the best song of the year in the Pop/Ballad category: the winner is Luis Miguel for "La incondicional," and composer Juan Carlos Calderón collects the award. The program ends with a performance by Kaoma, singing and dancing their Brazilian lambada hit. Commercials deleted.
