JOURNEYS WITH GEORGE (TV)
Summary
This documentary covers Alexandra Pelosi's year on the
2000 presidential campaign trail as a member of the
press corps for then-Governor George W. Bush. The
program begins at an airport rally in Iowa as Pelosi
meets her seatmate, "Richard from The Financial Times,"
who tells her why he likes America and election
campaigns. Pelosi asks Bush supporters at a 2:30 AM
New Hampshire rally what exactly they are doing. Next,
Pelosi introduces her "new best friend" and secret
crush, Trent a.k.a. "Newsweek Guy." Pelosi gives a
brief history of her family's long tradition as
Democrats, including acknowledging that her mother is
Representative Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California.
Then, Pelosi talks with "Bush's brain," chief
strategist Karl Rove, who discusses campaign strategies.
After Bush loses the New Hampshire primary to John
McCain (R-Ariz.), Pelosi notes that he becomes
"full-access George" immediately answering all her
questions and buddying up to her, going so far as to ask
about her potential romance with Newsweek Guy. Later
on in the campaign, Bush gets mad at Pelosi when she
asks a question about the Texas death penalty. Next,
Bush shows what he likes to eat for lunch, how a Texan
dresses, and how to bowl fruit. At a campaign stop in
Florida to meet Bush's brother Jeb, Pelosi grills Bush
on why she should vote for him. At the Republican
National Convention, Dick Cheney is tapped as Bush's
running mate. After a margarita-fueled party in which
the results of a straw poll taken by Pelosi predicting
Al Gore's victory are leaked to a gossip column, Pelosi
is ostracized by the other reporters, but Bush befriends
her, setting things right. Bush also presents Pelosi
with a cake at the celebration of her 29th birthday. As
election night approaches, Pelosi and her fellow
journalists pop champagne, celebrating the end of their
year and a half on the road.
