In this program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- tenor Luciano Pavarotti performs with the New York City Opera Orchestra, conducted by Julius Rudel. Pavarotti is joined by several other singers: sopranos Renee Fleming, Cheryl Studer, and Ruth Ann Swenson; mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick; tenor Marcello Giordani; baritones Haijing Fu and Lucio Gallo; and basses Paul Plishka and Andrea Silvestrelli. This tape begins part-way through the intermission. Host Hugh Downs interviews conductor Julius Rudel. Rudel discusses how he picks the music for performances, different techniques for working with different singers, and performances he is looking forward to. The second half of the program begins with Pavarotti's performance of "O paradiso" from Giacomo Meyerbeer's "L'Africana." Next, Swenson and Gallo sing "La ci darem la mano" from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Don Giovanni." Pavarotti and Fleming sing the Cherry Duet from Pietro Mascagni's "L'amico Fritz." Studer and Zajick sing the duet from Act II of Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida." Pavarotti and Fu sing the Act III duet from Verdi's "La forza del destino." Fu and Silvestrelli sing "Suoni la tromba" from Vincenzo Bellini's "I Puritani." As a finale, Fleming, Pavarotti, Fu, Plishka, Zajick, and Giordani sing the sextet from Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di lammermoor." For encores, Pavarotti sings "Recondita armonia" and "Elucevan le stelle" from Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca." Lastly, Pavarotti sings Eduardo Di Capua "O sole mio."
