LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC OPENING NIGHT 1989 {TAPE 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Tape one of two. One in this series on the performing arts. This program -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- is Opening Night for the 1989 season. Zubin Mehta conducts the New York Philharmonic in a performance of Wagner's "Tannhauser" Overture. Next, soprano Jessye Norman joins Mehta and the Philharmonic for a performance of Mahler's "Five Songs to Poems by Friedrich Ruckert" ("Ich atmet einen Lindenduft," "Blicke mir nicht in die Lieder," "Um Mitternacht," "Liebst du um Schonheit," and "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen"). During the intermission, a pretaped interview between Patrick Watson and Norman is shown. Norman answers questions on the following topics: the true life incident that inspired the film "Diva"; why she guards her private life; her singing range; preparing the mind for a performance; and her inspirations in life. After a short pause, Watson interviews Mehta backstage touching on the following topics: his previous experience conducting Norman; rests in the work of Wagner; the legend of Liebestod; and the draining nature of Mozart's Symphony No. 40. After the intermission, the Philharmonic performs Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor. Then, Norman rejoins them for a performance of Wagner's Prelude and "Liebestod" from "Tristan und Isolde." Continues with T:73449.
