CYRANO DE BERGERAC {TAPE 1 OF 2} {FRENCH} (TV)

Summary

Tape one of two. A television adaptation of Edmond Rostand's 1897 drama about Cyrano de Bergerac, a seventeenth-century poet and cavalier with an unfortunately large nose. The first scene introduces the main characters of the story: Cyrano, distinguished by his courage and his long nose; Cyrano's love interest Roxane; Baron Christian de Neuvillete, a new member of Cyrano's company of guards; Ligniere, a satirist; Ragueneau, a baker and Cyrano's friend; Comte de Guiche, a colonel who initially keeps Roxane as his mistress; and Le Bret, Cyrano's friend. The first scene begins in a bustling Parisian theater, just before a play. Christian has come to the play with his friend, Ligniere, to see Roxane, while Cyrano has come to stop the play's main actor, Montfleury, from performing (due to an earlier feud). As Cyrano harangues Montfleury, Vicomte de Valvert -- de Guiche's lackey and the person to whom he wishes to marry Roxane -- challenges Cyrano to a duel, which de Valvert loses. Following the duel, Cyrano confides his insecurities about women and his love for Roxane to Le Bret, who counsels Cyrano to stop making enemies through his fighting. As he is speaking to Le Bret, Cyrano receives a message from Roxane's governess, asking him to meet Roxane at Ragueneau's bakery the next morning. Cyrano leaves with Ligniere expecting to fight 100 men who plan to ambush Ligniere on his way home. At Ragueneau's bakery the next day, Cyrano meets Roxane who tells him about "a man she is in love with who doesn't know it." Cyrano thinks it is he, until Roxane describes the man as handsome. After Roxane confides her love for Christian, Cyrano agrees to protect him from the other guards and to have Christian write her. Roxane leaves and Cyrano's company of guards enter the bakery, asking him to recount his success in fighting against the 100 men the night before. Cyrano rejects the praises and offerings of de Guiche, who ultimately leaves in anger after admitting it was he who sent the 100 men. Le Bret again counsels Cyrano not to create enemies when offers are given. Christian enters and begins to make fun of Cyrano's nose at the behest of the other cadets. Cyrano ignores the taunts, and after sending the other cadets outside, discloses to Christian that he is Roxane's cousin and that she has confided to him her love for Christian. Christian fears his lack of eloquence will become apparent if he begins to write her, so Cyrano offers to write the love letters for him. The next scene begins with de Guiche telling Roxane that he must leave that night to fight the Spanish, along with his company of guards, to which Christian and Cyrano belong. Roxane convinces de Guiche to leave that night without telling anyone. Expecting to see Christian that night, Roxane asks Cyrano not to tell him that she expects Christian to improvise verse about his love for her. Cyrano promises, but immediately tells Christian upon seeing him. Though he plans to speak his own words under Roxane's balcony, Christian needs Cyrano's help, and ultimately cedes his place under the balcony to Cyrano, who -- indistinguishable from Christian because of the night -- speaks for him. The scene ends with a Capuchin priest appearing with a letter for Roxane. Continues with T:72966.
