Summary
A collection of news segments from February 16, 2001, documenting President George W. Bush's first official visit as president to meet with President Vicente Fox of Mexico. The first segment is a live report from the Baj’o International Airport in Silao where Air Force One has landed. President Fox receives Bush and they travel together to the San Crist—bal Ranch. Several reporters assist in delivering this information live from different locations in the area, coordinated through Javier Alatorre from the studio. Victor Hugo Puente reports from the airport, while Rosa Mar’a de Castro is in Guanajuato, together with Sergio Vicke and Arturo Tornel from inside the San Crist—bal Ranch. At the ranch, Bush visits Vicente Fox's mother, Do–a Mercedes, and they proceed to a private lunch with family and friends. According to the report, the two leaders are to discuss immigration, the goal of creating a controlled flow of people and free market commerce, reducing drug demand, and combating organizations trafficking narcotics. Images show Bush and Fox addressing the people gathered at the ranch and referring to these intentions, and exchanging friendly words. In another segment, Jacive PŽrez and cameraman Mauro Estrada report from the streets where the people are gathered to welcome the two presidents. The segment is a summary of the entire day, showing the enthusiasm of the people. After this segment, new reports follow from after the visit has ended and Bush has returned to the U.S. These are presented in afternoon and evening news broadcasts, as summaries among other news. Some of the same images are repeated, of Bush arriving at the airport, meeting Fox, traveling to the ranch. This meeting takes place on the same day that American forces have bombed Iraq, which Bush has authorized. Images show some of the casualties of the bombing. Another news broadcast later that same day repeats more of the same images of the meeting and introduces new ones with interviews with the Mexican secretary of the interior, Santiago Creal, commenting on the topics discussed and on the new relationship between Mexico and the U.S. Other interviews take place with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Mexican Foreign Minister Jorge Casta–eda. Reporters in these segments are Arturo Tornel, with cameraman Roberto Andrade, and Sergio Vicke with cameraman Ramiro Palma. Back in the studio there is a live video interview between reporter Javier Alatorre and President Vicente Fox. The president discusses the events of the day, in which both leaders were conducting their first meeting as presidents.
