(TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part seventeen
of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the
classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written
by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation
follows the love triangle between the main male heir
(Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu
and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the
four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the
novel. In this installment Xue Baochai advises Lin
Daiyu not to read "improper" books; Baochai shows her
affection for Jia Baoyu for the very first time; Baoyu
witnesses another couple's romance and wonders about
his own future; Baoyu mourns Jinchuan; and finally, Wang
Xifeng creates a scene over one of her husband's
affairs. Part seventeen begins with Xue Baochai
questioning Lin Daiyu about where she learned the
nonsense she spouted while playing "jiuling" (a drinking
game) the day before. Daiyu confesses she has been
reading the romance novel "Western Pavilion." Baochai
admits she has read it before, but thinks it is not an
appropriate book for young ladies to read and advises
Daiyu not to read such books anymore. Daiyu knows
Baochai means well and agrees with her, and they happily
go to join the other young ladies. Jia Xichun, the
youngest of the Jia daughters, is painting a picture of
the "Garden of Grand View" for Liu Laolao, and they all
give her advice on what to include in the painting. The
next day, Baochai visits Baoyu, and sees Xiren, one of
Baoyu's maids, sitting next to and sewing something for
Baoyu, who is taking a nap. Xiren gets called away, so
Baochai affectionately sits down beside Baoyu and
continues the sewing. She then hears Baoyu muttering in
his sleep that he wants a "wood and stone marriage"
instead of a "gold and jade marriage." "Wood and stone"
refers to a marriage between Baoyu and Daiyu, while
"gold and jade" refers to one between Baoyu and Baochai.
Baochai is upset at this sign that Baoyu favors Daiyu
over her. Meanwhile, Baoyu witnesses the love affair
between Jia Qiao (Baoyu's nephew) and Lingguan (a sickly
female opera singer owned by the Jia household) and
wonders who will take care of him (Baoyu) when he is
old and dying. Baoyu goes into a depression and decides
to mourn Jinchuan (the maid who committed suicide due
to his flirting with her) in a quiet nunnery outside the
Jia housing complex. He misses the beginning of Wang
Xifeng's birthday party, worrying Mother Jia. At her
party, everyone jokingly forces Xifeng to drink. She
gets half drunk and goes back to her unit, only to find
her husband, Jia Lian, sleeping with the wife of Baoer,
a servant. Xifeng goes into a tirade, starting a fight
with Jia Lian and then running to Mother Jia for help.
Mother Jia protects Xifeng, scolds Jia Lian harshly, and
makes Jia Lian apologize to Xifeng in front of everyone.
Baoer's wife commits suicide and her family requests
hush money, which Jia Lian pays to keep the whole affair
quiet.
