HONG LOU MENG: LIU LAOLAO XIYOU DAGUANYUAN {DREAM
OF RED MANSIONS: LIU LAOLAO TOURS THE GARDEN OF
GRAND VIEW} {#98} {PT. 16 OF 36} {MANDARIN CHINESE}
(TV)

Summary

The second of two programs on this tape. Part sixteen of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel. In this installment, Liu Laolao, a visiting poor relative of the Wang family, tours the "Garden of Grand View." Liu Laolao is so impressed by all the beautiful scenery that she wants a painting of the Garden to show her family and friends. Liu Laolao enjoys the Garden, putting some flowers in her hair and admiring the pottery and decorations. All the Jia maids and young ladies are amused by her behavior and continuously laugh at Liu Laolao. They play "jiuling" (a drinking game), and intentionally get Liu Laolao drunk, so they can laugh even more. Liu Laolao does get drunk, gets lost, ends up in Jia Baoyu's unit, and finally, falls asleep on Baoyu's bed. The next day, Liu Laolao prepares to leave, but first Wang Xifeng asks her to choose a name for her baby daughter: Liu Laolao names her "Qiaoer." When Liu Laolao is finally ready to leave, all the Jia ladies present her with many gifts to take home. Liu Laolao thanks them profusely and happily goes home.
