Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. Part eleven of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel. In this installment, a poor male clan member named Jia Yun tries to get some work from Jia Lian and his wife Wang Xifeng; and Jia Huan (Jia Baoyu's half-brother by his father's concubine) injures Baoyu in an act of jealousy. Part eleven begins with Jia Yun, a poor male clan member, asking Jia Lian for some work so he can support himself, but Jia Lian can't promise him anything. At the advice of a servant, Jia Yun goes to Wang Xifeng instead bearing gifts for her, and Xifeng gives Jia Yun some gardening work to do. During these visits, Jia Yun meets and falls in love with Xiaohong, a secondary maid in Jia Baoyu's unit. A few days later, Baoyu goes to see his mother, and Jia Huan, who was always jealous of Baoyu's favored status in the family, burns Baoyu's face with a lit candle. Everyone rushes to Baoyu's side, and Lin Daiyu is especially worried, so Xifeng jokes that Daiyu should marry Baoyu in the near future. Although Baoyu is not badly hurt, Jia Huan is severely punished by Xifeng, who is in charge of inner household matters. Jia Huan's birth mother takes revenge by sticking pins in voodoo dolls of Baoyu and Xifeng. Baoyu and Xifeng quickly become very sick, coming close to death. Just when everyone is talking about making funeral arrangements for them, Baoyu and Xifeng surprisingly begin to recover. Seeing that Baoyu and Xifeng are getting better, everyone begins to relax, and once again joke about Daiyu's marriage to Baoyu.
