HONG LOU MENG: WANG XIFENG DU SHE XIANGSIJU {DREAM
OF RED MANSIONS: WANG XIFENG PLANS A LOVE TRAP}
{PT. 5 OF 36} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. Part five of thirty-six in this television adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, "A Dream of Red Mansions," written by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s.Ê While this adaptation follows the love triangle between the main male heir (Jia Baoyu) and his two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai), it also shows the rise and fall of the four elite families (Jia, Wang, Shi, and Xue) of the novel. In this installment, Wang Xifeng plays a cruel joke on Jia Rui, which results in his death; Lin Daiyu goes to visit her ill father; and suspicion arises over an affair between Qin Keqing and her father-in-law, Jia Zhen, which results in Qin Keqing taking her own life. It begins with Jia Rui's infatuation with Wang Xifeng. Xifeng is offended by his advances and decides to teach him a lesson. She pretends to be interested in Jia Rui, and sets him up for a trap. She invites him to meet her that night, and he does, but he ends up spending the whole night freezing outside because she has left the door locked. The next day, before Jia Rui has a chance to complain to her, Xifeng accuses him of having stood her up and sets up another meeting for that night. Once again, Jia Rui shows up at the agreed meeting place, and this time finds two of his cousins waiting for him. They ridicule him and beat him, and then coerce him into paying them for keeping their mouths closed. Jia Rui returns home too ashamed to tell his grandparents what happened, and becomes very sick (emotionally and physically), and eventually dies. Meanwhile, Lin Daiyu's father has become ill, so Mother Jia sends Jia Lian to accompany her to visit her father.Ê Qin Keqing is also still ill, and Lady You (her mother-in-law), upon finding Qin Keqing's hairpin among her husband's belongings, demands that Keqing's personal maid (Ruizhu) identify it. When Keqing hears of this incident, she gets even sicker. Ruizhu then hears Baozhu (another personal maid of Keqing's) crying in the courtyard at night. Baozhu confesses that she saw Jia Zhen (Keqing's father-in-law) and Keqing in bed one day, and that he had taken her hairpin, the same hairpin that Ruizhu had just identified for Lady You. Baozhu and Ruizhu both worry that Lady You might try to kill them in order to avoid anyone knowing about the affair. Qin Keqing also fears the truth coming out and hangs herself in shame. That night, Wang Xifeng dreams of Keqing coming to say farewell to her.
