HONG LOU MENG {A DREAM OF RED MANSIONS, YUE OPERA}
{TAPE 2 OF 2} {#98} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:70828. Tape two of two. This program
is a 1962 production of the Yue Opera adaptation of the
classic Chinese novel, "Dream of Red Mansions," written
by Cao Xueqin in the mid-1700s. While the complete
novel describes the rise and fall of four elite families
in old China, this adaptation focuses on the love
triangle between the main male heir (Jai Baoyu) and his
two female first cousins (Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai).
As the drama resumes, the courtship of Baoyu and Daiyu
begins to hit snags. Although Daiyu has heard Baoyu say
that he loves her, she is constantly wounded by
incidents that seem to suggest that he does not care.
One late night, Baochai visits Baoyu. When Daiyu knocks
on the door, Baoyu's maid tells her that the master
wishes for no visitors. Baoyu later explains that he
had nothing to do with the matter, but Daiyu continues
to be upset -- so upset that she becomes physically ill.
Although Baoyu tries to comfort her again and again,
Daiyu is never fully emotionally satisfied or physically
well. The situation finally changes when one day Baoyu
reacts terribly to hearing that Daiyu is going to return
to her family. His grandmother and mother decide to
arrange a marriage for the young man. They like Daiyu
for her talents and beauty, but they disapprove of her
ill health and "improper" behavior and determine that
Baochai is a better match for Baoyu. The mother and
grandmother are concerned that Baoyu and Daiyu may do
something drastic when they hear of the proposed
marriage, but another cousin named Wang Xifeng
proposes a plan: the family will tell Baoyu that he is
marrying Daiyu but put Baochai in her place. With the
red veil over BaochaiÕs head throughout the ceremony,
Baoyu will know the truth only after the wedding is
over. Daiyu accidentally learns of the plan and
immediately falls gravely ill. She dies on her lover's
wedding night, with Baoyu's name on her lips. After the
ceremony, Baoyu removes his bride's veil. Stunned, he
starts to leave to go to Daiyu, but Baochai cries out
that Daiyu is dead, and Baoyu faints. Later, he goes to
Daiyu's funeral and tearfully muses over their love.
When the sun rises, Baoyu says his final farewells,
hears the tolling bells of the nearby monastery, and
goes off to become a monk.
