QUEER AS FOLK {U.S. VERSION}: THE KING OF BABYLON (TV)
Summary
One in this series about the day-to-day lives of a circle of gay and lesbian friends living in Pittsburgh.
In this episode, it's the night of the "King of Babylon" contest at Babylon. Contestants do a strip tease for the club's crowd, with the winner getting a cash prize and a vacation. While planning their evening out, Brian challenges Michael to bring David along, focusing on the fact that he's a bit older. Michael then persuades David to join them. Ted brings Blake along, but none of Ted's friends accept the former drug addict. Even Ted isn't completely sure that Blake can be trusted among the wild crowd at Babylon. Still, he's angered by the fact that his friends won't accept his partner.
The King of Babylon contest proceeds in the background. Justin gets angry when Brian tells him they can meet up in an hour -- meaning if Brian doesn't get lucky with someone else, Justin will be his backup plan. Emmett meets a guy on the dance floor, and it's love at first sight. They daydream about their future together, until the guy turns out to be less than Emmett thought him to be. David and Brian get into an argument after David criticizes the scene at Babylon, and David dares Brian to enter the King of Babylon contest. David and Michael are shocked when he actually does.
Hurt and frustrated, Justin also enters the contest, hoping that it might make Brian appreciate him. Elsewhere, Vic gets arrested after being solicited by an undercover cop in a public restroom. Debbie goes to the police station to pick him up, bringing Melanie with her to act as Vic's attorney. They find the bail is too high for them to afford, so Debbie tries to persuade the desk sergeant to give Vic his HIV medications.
Back at Babylon, David and Michael discover that, rather than entering himself, Brian signed David up in the contest. David surprises everyone by actually participating. The shock continues when Justin is announced as the final contestant. Before the evening concludes, Justin gets his revenge on Brian for being insensitive. Michael prepares to go home after David's participation leaves him the center of attention. Debbie and Melanie then show up at Babylon, trying to find someone who can afford Vic's bail. To everyone's surprise, Blake comes through with the money, leaving Ted's friends to rethink their judgments of him.
