WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: SNOW WHITE: THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL (TV)
Summary
One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This made-for-television production is loosely based on the story by the Brothers Grimm. The program opens as peasant Josephine pricks her finger on a rose and drops blood onto some apple blossoms, then imagines having a baby with snow-white skin, a rose-like mouth, and ebony hair. Nine months later, Josephine and her husband John have a baby, which they call Snow White. However, Josephine dies shortly after the child's birth. With his infant daughter, John struggles to brave the brutal winter. About to die in the frost, John's tears melt the ice and bring back to life a hideous creature with the power to grant wishes. After John is told to ask for whatever he desires, he first requests milk for the baby. Next, John asks for his wife back, but the granter cannot raise the dead. So, for John's other two wishes he is given a new queen and his own kingdom. Immediately, John is stunned to find himself -- along with baby Snow White -- residing in a castle, where he is treated as royalty. Meanwhile, seven dwarves in the forest search for their missing gnome friends. The dwarf's leader, Sunday, splits up the search party with each going to a different locale. At the same time, the creature enlists his loathsome, crone-like sister Elspeth to be John's new queen. Eventually, Sunday finds the gnomes, all petrified on Elspeth's property. When he tries to free them, Elspeth petrifies Sunday as well. Afterward, the creature uses an enchanted mirror to make Elspeth beautiful, "the fairest of them all," and fit to be queen. The creature forces Elspeth to break her mirror in order to cast a spell to make John accept her. Meanwhile, the six other dwarves search for Sunday. Elspeth is allowed to keep one mirror fragment as the other shards rain from the sky, with one getting lodged in John's eye. Afterward, John awakens to find Elspeth at his side. Sixteen years later, Princess Snow White has grown beautiful and is a favorite of the locals. As the heir to a neighboring kingdom, Prince Albert has heard about Snow White and decides to visit her castle. Elspeth nervously prepares for his arrival and snipes at Snow White, who is convinced that the petrified Sunday is her only friend. Upon seeing the princess, Prince Albert is immediately smitten.
Later, alone, the vain Elspeth consults her mirror, still seeing if she is "the fairest of them all." Afterward, John goes to speak with Elspeth, wondering why she doesn't spend as much time with him. Elspeth slaps John, accidentally dislodging the mirror chip from his eye. John suddenly can "see" and thinks Elspeth looks different. The next day, John wanders his grounds, smelling the roses and finding them as beautiful as Josephine's once were. John speaks with Snow White, claiming he hasn't been the father he promised to be. Later, at a royal dinner, Prince Alfred teaches Snow White how to bowl as he flirts with her. Elspeth then makes a play for the younger man, trying to cast a spell on him. However, her shard of mirror accidentally lands in servant Hector's eye, foiling her plans. Meanwhile, John is slowly becoming aware of his wife's devious ways. Unsure of herself, Elspeth again consults her mirror, who this time reveals that Snow White is now the fairest of them all. Outside, Prince Albert continues his flirtations with Snow White, until Hector calls for Snow White, claiming her parents want to see her. Hector leads Snow White away as Elspeth makes yet another play for Prince Albert. He runs away and incites her fury, causing her to turn him into a bear. Her spell also has a side-effect as it unfreezes the right half of Sunday's body, allowing him mobility once again. Meanwhile, Hector prepares to kill Snow White under Elspeth's orders, but he is unable to complete the task. Hector order Snow White to flee, which she does. Eventually, Snow White comes upon a white horse, which she mounts and rides, not realizing that it belongs to Wednesday the dwarf.
Meanwhile, Hector returns to Elspeth claiming he has killed Snow White, presenting her with the heart of a deer. Later, after thwarting Elspeth's plan to poison his food, John goes searching for his daughter. Trapped in Elspeth's mirror room, he then steps through one of her mirrors, getting stuck in another dimension. Later, Elspeth realizes via her mirror that Snow White is still alive. After she kills Hector for his deception, Elspeth discovers Snow White's hiding place in the forest. Elspeth sets up a ruse for Snow White, leaving her with a silken sash which cuts off her breathing. However, Sunday finds Snow White and cuts the sash, bringing her back to life. Meanwhile, the six remaining dwarves find Sunday with Snow White, with all then taking shelter in the dwarves' house. Though scared at first, Snow White quickly comes to appreciate the dwarves, deciding to stay with them. However, she wants to find her father, reunite with the prince, save the gnomes, and stop Elspeth. The dwarves agree to help her, but refuse to let Snow White tag along. Meanwhile, Elspeth prepares a poisoned apple for Snow White. She transforms herself to look like the deceased Josephine so that Snow White will trust her. Then, the dwarves arrive at the castle, trying to locate John. At the same time, Elspeth tries to get into the dwarves' home. Ultimately, she gets the key from Monday, then petrfies him. Soon, the trusting Snow White is sampling the queen's apple, which causes her to fall into a deep sleep. Meanwhile, the dwarves are unable to find John and, returning home, stumble upon a bear, which is really Prince Albert. The bear drags them to the frozen Monday, after which they discover the seemingly dead Snow White. The dwarves prepare to bury her, but decide to put her in a glass coffin where her beauty can still be seen.
Meanwhile, Elspeth checks to see if she is now the fairest in the land. Trying to transform herself from the body of Josephine back into the queen, she instead reverts to her crone-like form. Her brother then appears but refuses to make his sister beautiful again, saying that it is a punishment for how she treated Snow White. In a rage, Elspeth smashes the mirror. As a result, the bear turns back into Prince Albert, who then kisses Snow White, bringing her back to life. In addition, John is freed from his mirror prison, and the dwarves and gnomes effected by spells are all returned to normal. As Elspeth flees through the castle, the gnomes descend upon her to exact their revenge. As the creature returns to his origins, Snow White says goodbye to the dwarves and rides off with Prince Albert to her father and his kingdom. Includes commercials.
