MURDER ON A SUNDAY MORNING (TV)
Summary
This Academy Award-winning documentary tells the story of a Jacksonville, Florida murder and the court case that followed. The program begins with eyewitnesses discussing -- both accurately and inaccurately -- what they saw on the morning that a woman was murdered at a Florida motel. Brenton Butler discusses the police arriving at his house to arrest him based on information gleaned from several eyewitnesses. Butler's head attorney James Williams talks about the case he has for winning the murder trial while Butler is shown going about his day in jail. Two other Butler attorneys, Michael Glover and Dwayne Darnell, discuss how the "race card" was played with the police, and how it might play in the courtroom. The Butler family is shown meeting to pray for a not guilty verdict. Four months elapse and Butler still in jail as his trial finally comes to an end. After a verdict of not guilty, Butler celebrates with his family. Soon thereafter, lawyers Ann Finnell and Patrick McGuiness sort through the evidence and actually find the real murderer.
