ESTA NOCHE CRUZAMOS EL MISSISSIPPI {TONIGHT WE CROSS THE MISSISSIPPI} {SPANISH} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk shows, hosted by Pepe Navarro, which combines humor, current events, politics, and arts. Regular contributors include the comic characters of Krisp’n and Marcela the Goat. This edition begins with Galavisi—n's recent coverage of Latin American comedian Julio Sabala, caught on his yacht in Florida with a woman. Reporter Raul "el Gordo" de Molina is seen following Sabala in his attempt to get more information from him; later segments of the program follow the story in more detail. Navarro's first segment deals with the scandal involving Jesus Gil, the mayor of Marbella and manager of the Athletico de Madrid soccer team, who has been accused of selling public land to a construction company called Hicopromar, owned by his friend Antonio Herrero. Navarro's guests in the studio are Isabel Garc’a Marcos, PSOE spokesperson in Marbella, and Gonzalo San Segundo, who has been covering the story for Cambio 16 newspaper. Gil, who joins the conversation over the phone, tries to defend himself from these allegations, and discredit the two guests by accusing Garc’a Marcos of stealing money and San Segundo of not being a credible investigative reporter. The second story covered in the program is an update on the famous crime known as "El Caso Alcacer." Nearly ten years after three girls were kidnapped and murdered in the town of Alcacer, Valencia, the case is still open and only one man is being tried in relation to the case, Miguel Ricart Tarrega. Two guests join Pepe Navarro in the studio: Fernando Garc’a, father of one of the kidnapped girls, Miriam; and Juan Ignacio Blanco, reporter and criminologist. Garc’a and Blanco talk about the upcoming trial, questioning the investigation; Blanco details discrepancies in the case, arguing that many questions remain unanswered and many facts don't fit in the police reports or the sequence of events. An important question remains about the location of Antonio Angles, named the main suspect in these crimes, who fled before he could be found and remains in hiding; fingerprint expert Carlos Rojo (in pre-taped footage) reports that a set of fingerprints found in South America matched those of Angles. The program continues with a segment about Susana and Juan (last names not provided), a homeless couple who were staying in an abandoned building when Susana gave birth to their child. The segment features interview footage of Susana and Juan, who recount their story: after being found by the authorities, the mother and the baby were taken to a hospital and the two parents were afraid they would lose their newborn because they had nowhere to live; thanks to a program for homeless people they expect to receive a place to live and Juan is looking for work. The first part concludes with a comic promotion for eyeglasses, and a message on-screen soliciting actors, comedians, or anyone wishing to appear on "Esta Noche Cruzamos el Mississippi." Commercials deleted. Continues with T:69609.

Raul "el Gordo" de Molina reports for Galavision about Julio Sabala's excursion on a boat. Molina's cameras catch Sabala in a compromising position with his new girlfriend, and Molina presents Sabala with his photos at the airport. Next, Navarro introduces a pre-taped segment in which everyday Spaniards respond to Infanta Cristina's engagement (youngest daughter of King Juan Carlos I of Spain) to Inaki Urdangarin, a handball player in Barcelona; the segments demonstrate that Spaniards are divided over whether a member of the royal family should be allowed to marry a commoner. To discuss both sides of this argument, Navarro welcomes two guests, journalists Jaime Penafiel and Fernando Gracia, to the studio. The guests debate each other, at times hotly, and the segment includes footage of Infanta Cristina and her fiancee; they also discuss the concepts of "Pink Monarchy" vs. "Professional Monarchy," and "Borbon Monarchy" vs. "Franco Monarchy." Next, the outrageous Krisp’n reports on several stories: in the first story, he tries to find out how old Lolita Flores is (a famous singer in Spain and daughter of the late Lola Flores); his second story pokes a bit of fun at Infanta Cristina's engagement announcement; and his last story is about Roci’to's (daughter of the famous Spanish singer Roc’o Jurado) entry into the fashion world, despite the fact that she is not a model and has no training in fashion. The last segment includes footage of opinions given by Paula Vazquez, Arantxa del Sol, Victorio y Luccino, Esther Arroyo, and Mar Saura, who all think that if someone chose her to model for them, it's their right to do so and they cannot criticize her for trying a new field. Then, Navarro interviews actress and singer Nati Mistral in the studio about her career, her life, relationships, and objectives. Navarro asks her about her political affiliations, given that although she claims to hold strong conservative ideologies, most of the works she sings are written by strong liberals. She explains that she likes the work, and says nothing about the ideologies. She talks about her upcoming performances in the Teatro Albeniz, where she will be singing for five consecutive days, and encourages viewers to attend. The program ends with columnist Marcela the Goat "speaking" about the progress of Spain after its first year under Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. (Aznar's first anniversary in office was brought up on several occasions thoughout the program.) The Goat concludes with the Aznar's famous saying, "Espana va bien" (Spain is going well). Commercials deleted.
