CHAPTER 1: MANY HEROES COMPETE FOR ONE LAND, PT. 1:
THREE BROTHERS SWORN TO ALLEGIANCE IN A PEACH
GARDEN} {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The first of two programs on this tape. The premiere
episode in this television adaptation of the classic
Chinese novel, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," written
by Luo Guanzhong in the late 1300s. This adaptation
closely follows the novel, telling the story of three
kingdoms competing for the unification of China.
Chapter 1, part one outlines the chaotic events of the
times; the three major heroes, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and
Zhang Fei, meet and become sworn brothers; the three
brothers become involved in the Yellow Turbans Uprising;
and finally, Liu Bei is appointed head of a small
county. This installment begins with a general
introduction to the historical background of the series.
It is the end of the East Han Dynasty (25-220 A.D.), a
period characterized by the rule of eunuchs and constant
wars, hard times, and numerous rebellions. The most
important of these rebellions is the Yellow Turbans
Uprising beginning in AD 184, which poses a grave threat
to the dynasty. The Chinese Emperor at that time,
Emperor Ling, takes the advice of his brother-in-law,
General He Jin, and authorizes provincial governments to
train their own armies in order to quell the rebellions.
Next, three of the major heroes of the times, Liu Bei,
Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, meet. Zhang Fei, a butcher by
trade, is angry at Guan Yu for giving Zhang Fei's meat
to the poor. A fight breaks out between the two in
which neither one can claim victory. Upon seeing this,
Liu Bei, one of the onlookers, steps forward and
persuades the two to make peace with one another. Later
the three meet in a peach garden and find they have a
lot in common and become sworn brothers. After that,
they buy weapons and armor, recruit soldiers, and join
three provincial leaders, Generals Sun Jian, Cao Cao and
Dong Zhuo, in quelling the Yellow Turbans Uprising. As
a reward for Liu Bei's military contribution and for
saving General Dong Zhuo's life, Dong Zhuo appoints Liu
Bei as the head of a small county. Liu Bei governs in
the interest of the local people, and his superior Du
You is unhappy because he is unable to get bribes from
him. Du You tries to imprison Liu Bei but fails,
prompting the short-tempered Zhang Fei to give Du You a
good beating. With the help of another official, Liu
Bei is able to report Du You's actions to the Emperor,
who transfers Liu Bei to a position as head of Pingyuan
County.
