FRANCE EN DIRECT, LA: TERRORISME: VAINCRE LA PEUR {FRANCE LIVE: TERRORISM: TO CONQUER FEAR} {FRENCH} (TV)

Summary

One in this intermittent series of discussion programs featuring live questions from viewers. This edition, airing six days after the terrorist bombing of a subway car at the Port Royal metro stop in Paris, focuses on victims and those who care for them professionally. Anchor Beno”t Duquesne and his associate Albert du Roy welcome as guests Pierre Bedier and Marie-No‘lle Lienemann, mayors of Paris suburbs; Soheib Ben Cheikh, the Imam of Marseilles; Judge Michle Bernard-Requin; Colette Bonnivard, a former victim of terrorism who has written a book about victims' rights; newspaper readers Jean Bordat, Claire Gallon, and Sonia JalŽno; Henri Brencourt, who witnessed the explosion at Port Royal; Pierre Carli, manager of rescue services; psychologist Carole Damiani; Claude GuŽant, director general of the National Police; victims' rights lawyer Georges Holleaux; Commander Philippe Lavoil of the Paris Fire Department; GŽrard Lopez of the Psychiatric Center for Victims; Alain Marsaud of the Transit Authority; SŽbastian Plique, who was injured in a 1995 attack; metro director Jacques Rapoport; Franoise Rudetzki, founder of a victims' group; psychiatrist Guy Thomas; and 1995 victim GŽrard Vidot. The broadcast begins with a brief report on the troubles that plague victims of the recent attack, after which Henri Brencourt recalls the panic and feelings of guilt he experienced after the bomb's explosion. Lavoil details the rapid response of the Paris firefighters, and Rapoport discusses the recent training drills that aided rescue workers. Pierre Carli, who was the first doctor to arrive on the scene at Port Royal, describes the procedure he followed, which enabled the city to send the appropriate rescue personnel. Carole Damiani talks about her treatment of many of the victims and witnesses for nightmares and flashbacks. After a report on the intensive therapy undertaken by SŽbastian Plique after his injuries in the subway attack in 1995, Plique talks about the changes in his personality since the disaster. Next, Colette Bonnivard shares some of the ideas in her book, which encourages victims not to give up hope. She and GŽrard Lopez briefly debate the virtues of individual versus group therapy for victims, and Rudetzki notes that her organization, "SOS Attacks," focuses on the many different areas in which victims need help, judicial and vocational as well as medical and psychological. Michle Bernard-Requin discusses legal aid to victims, and GŽrard Vidot expresses his grievances against the legal system. Georges Holleaux and Claude GuŽant discuss the importance of finding the perpetrators of terrorist attacks, both for the state and for victims, and Alain Marsaud talks about the difficulty of identifying criminals in these cases. After a report on the security precautions on the train and metro lines almost a week after the Port Royal attack, Jacques Rapoport discusses the role of engineers in guarding their trains. One of the newspaper readers wonders aloud whether the police are really as active as they might be, and she is reassured by GuŽant. A report details some of the recent activities of the Paris bomb squad, after which Duquesne raises the troubling question of possible police infringement of civil liberties, particularly among members of the Muslim community. Gueant argues that French Muslims are not being targeted, but Soheib Ben Cheikh contends that the government makes an unspoken association between Muslims and terrorists. Newspaper reader Jean Bordat suggests that politicians need to address the social conditions that lead young French people to work for terrorists, and Ben Cheikh concurs. Albert du Roy concludes by noting that the French are in the process of learning to live and deal with terrorism.
