SIX FEET UNDER: KNOCK, KNOCK {FIRST SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, Mitzi Dalton Huntley, the cut-throat executive from Kroehner, the corporate funeral business, plays golf with employee Matthew Gilardi. As they talk shop about Kroehner's recent financial troubles, Mitzi hooks a ball -- which strikes and kills a nearby resident, Lilian Grace Montrose. Nate takes his funeral director licensing test, and afterwards Brenda asks him to go with her to visit her brother Billy in the mental hospital. There, Billy is remarkably lucid; he apologizes to Brenda and expresses regret for past indiscretions. On the drive home, Brenda brings up the subject of marriage. When Nate hesitates, their dialogue turns into a heated argument, and they get into a car accident. After treatment at the hospital, Nate and Brenda realize how important they really are to each other. Nate is also made aware of a potentially serious medical condition he has, called Arterio-Venous Malformation (AVM). Shocked and scared, Nate is suddenly forced to confront his own mortality. Meanwhile, David is left to deal with control-freak Tracy Montrose, the niece of the woman who was killed near the golf course. Tracy wants the funeral to be "resplendent," and David is immediately overwhelmed by her compulsive planning. Ruth gets fired from the flower shop, and her dinner date with Hiram leads to an unexpected change. Later, Nikolai makes a pass at Ruth, and it looks as if their relationship may move in a new direction. Claire goes to a party at Parker's dad's house with her boyfriend Gabe. When Gabe goes to buy beer with his friends, they end up robbing the convenience store and are caught on the store's surveillance camera. At a church meeting, David stands up for Father Jack, who performed a same-sex commitment ceremony and is now threatened with far-reaching consequences. The situation proves a challenge for David, who is still haunted by his own gay-identity crisis. At Lilian Montrose's funeral, Nate consoles Tracy, who admits her emotional devastation over the loss of her aunt. After the funeral, everything is quickly and unceremoniously rearranged for Federico's son's christening party.
