CHINESE LEADERS VISIT THE UNITED STATES {MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
This tape consists of two programs that depict visits by
Chinese leaders Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin to the
United States. Before the programs start, a one-minute
segment shows Mao ZedongÕs meeting in Beijing with
President Richard M. Nixon and Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger in 1972. It is unnarrated but captioned in
Chinese. The first program, which features voice-over
narration, focuses on Deng Xiaoping's visit to the
United States in 1979. It begins with images of Deng
and his delegation at a reception banquet at Hilton
Hotel; this footage is followed by a signing ceremony in
which Chinese and American officials, principally Deng
Xiaoping and President Jimmy Carter, sign diplomatic
memoranda. The program then shows Deng Xiaoping and
his wife Zhou Lin hosting a thank-you banquet for Vice
President Mondale and other American officials, after
which Deng Xiaoping is seen on Air Force One in the
company of his delegation and American officials on his
trips to a variety of American cities. In Atlanta,
Georgia, he greets officials and is seen laying a wreath
at the tomb of Martin Luther King, Jr., and visiting the
Ford Motor Company. In Houston, he is greeted by the
governor and the mayor. Deng then visits the Lyndon
Johnson Space Center and the Hughes Tools Center. At a
rodeo, Deng accepts the gift of a cowboy hat and jacket
from a cowgirl. Deng then is seen visiting Seattle and
the Boeing Company. In the meantime, ChinaÕs Deputy
Prime Minister Fang Yi is seen in California, visiting
an airplane center in Los Angeles, an offshore drilling
platform, and Disneyland. The program ends as Deng and
his delegation depart for China. The second program, "A
Cross-Century Handshake: President Jiang ZeminÕs Visit
To the United States," focuses on JiangÕs trip in 1997.
It is narrated, with captioning where speeches are made.
The program starts with the welcome ceremony on the
South Lawn of the White House, where Jiang and his wife
Wang Yeping are greeted by President Bill Clinton and
his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton. After a brief
historical summary of the relationship between China
and the U.S., the program continues with the ceremony,
at which President Clinton and President Jiang both
make speeches. This is followed by interviews with
Henry Kissinger and other experts on the significance of
JiangÕs visit to the U.S., plus a brief history of
JiangÕs previous meetings with Clinton. The program
then returns to JiangÕs visit to the White House, which
is followed by Chinese captioning of the U.S.-China
Joint Declaration. Next, the program shows a joint
press conference by Clinton and Jiang, followed by
interviews with experts about the relationship between
the two nations. Jiang is shown at receptions with
Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and other high
officials and at various official signing ceremonies.
The Chinese president is also seen visiting the New York
Stock Exchange, IBM, AT&T, Bell Laboratory, the Hughes
Company, and the historical sites of Colonial
Williamsburg and Pearl Harbor. The program then views
Jiang with Clinton at a concert; this is followed by the
Chinese leader's meeting with his college teacher from
Shanghai, who now lives in Philadelphia. Jiang is seen
making a speech at Harvard University and taking
questions from the audience. The program ends as Jiang
and his delegation depart for China.
