BAND OF BROTHERS: REPLACEMENTS {EPISODE 4} (TV)
Summary
Part four in this ten-part miniseries based on the experiences of Easy Company, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, United States Army 101st Airborne Division, during World War II, and featuring commentary from Easy Company veterans preceding each episode. This episode begins on September 13, 1944 in Aldbourne, England, as Compton and other members of Easy Company relax and play darts at the pub. There, the old members of Easy Company try to mingle with some quiet replacements that have been sent up. The new boys are told by Guarnare that they should pay attention to Randleman, "the smartest man in the company." Tensions flare between the members that were actually in Normandy and the replacements that weren't, until Private James Miller makes a symbolic gesture. Then, it is announced that Lipton has become Easy Company's new first sergeant. Lipton announces that the unit will move out again. Easy Company will tackle "Operation Market Garden," parachuting into German-occupied Holland to liberate Eindhoven. The next day, Sobel is spotted by Easy Company members as he drives past them, making his return as a fly officer. Then, Wynn returns, still a bit banged up after getting out of the hospital. He claims he's ready for the company's jump. Sobel immediately goes to Malarkey, accusing him of having swiped an army motorcycle. Meanwhile, the replacements worry about their upcoming leap.
On September 17, 1944, Easy Company carries out its massive parachuting into Holland. Once on the ground, the armed unit charges toward Eindhoven, where the Dutch townspeople welcome the army as liberators and fete the soldiers. Miller is confused as to why Germans don't seem to be around. Seeing no time to celebrate, Nixon, Winters, and the other superior officers keep their men moving onward toward a river cross into Germany. Meanwhile, the Dutch resistance publicly shears the hair off any women that slept with the Nazis. Then, British tanks arrive in town. With assistance from some locals, Nixon and Winters are told where to head to find the Germans. The next day, passing through Van Gogh's hometown of Nuenen, Easy Company is surprised by sniper fire and a German attack. A superior force of German tanks arrive on the scene and Easy Company is forced to retreat after suffering many casualties and getting little help from their British allies. While retreating, Randleman is nowhere to be seen, Miller gets killed, and an injured Compton has to be carted out on a travois. Randleman is forced to hide out in a barn. There, he meets a Dutch farmer and his daughter who tend to a deep wound in his back. That evening, the shook-up men of Easy Company recount the harrowing day. Still hiding in the barn, Randleman hears German forces nearby. When a few soldiers wander in, Randleman is forced to bayonet one who has grown suspicious. Meanwhile, Guarnere and several men from Randleman's squad head back into town searching for him. By daylight, Randleman finds the deceased Miller, then meets up with his men, who give him a warm welcome. However, there's little time for back-slapping as the men have to quickly mount up and head back out. Winters bemoans the subsequent bombing of Eindhoven, also admitting to Nixon that he hates that they retreated. Meanwhile, Nixon thinks that they're going to have to find another way into Germany after the failure of Market Garden.
