BAND OF BROTHERS: CROSSROADS {EPISODE 5} (TV)

Summary

Part five in this ten-part miniseries based on the experiences of Easy Company, the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, United States Army 101st Airborne Division, during World War II, and featuring commentary from Easy Company veterans preceding each episode. This episode begins on October 17, 1944 in Schoonderlogt, Holland, as Winters wakes up Nixon to head back to regimen. Sink tells Winters and Nixon that Easy Company needs to rescue 140 British soldiers that were captured during the failed Market Garden mission. Heading back to the temporary barracks, Winters is forced to log a report about his unit's October 5 mission, during which he led his squad to a hilly incline where many Germans were killed. The next morning, Winters took his bayonet-armed men across a dike. However, he arrived first and instinctively killed an unarmed teenage soldier at close range. Once the rest of Winters's men arrived, it became a "turkey shoot" of German soldiers. Winters learned after capturing some prisoners that the men were S.S. Pvt. David Webster is among the twenty-two wounded members of Easy. Upon completion of the report, Winters is promoted by Sink to Battalion Executive Officer, putting Easy Company in the hands of Lt. Frederick "Moose" Heyliger. Later, Nixon and Heyliger are amused to find that the promoted Winters now has his own orderly and is mainly doing administrative work.

The next day, Heyliger and his men set out on "Operation Pegasus" to rescue the 140 captured British soldiers, ultimately earning a salute from "the red berets." Next, on October 31, 1944 in Driel, Holland, Winters gives counsel to Heylinger while walking along a train track. However, a trigger-happy American sentry accidentally shoots Heylinger. Next, on December 10, 1944 in Mourmelon-le-Grand, France, Winters receives a letter from Heyliger, who is still struggling with his recovery. Then, Nixon insists that Winters take a forty-eight hour pass and go to Paris to change his thoughts. There, Winters continues to be haunted by the memories of the young German he shot. Returning to Mourmelon, Winters finds the troops entranced while watching John Wayne and Marlene Dietrich on screen in "Seven Sinners." During the movie, Winters speaks with a despondent Compton about his injuries. Then, Easy Company is shocked and upset to learn they will have to move out to the Ardennes Forest to face a massive German counterattack. Winters tells Lt. Norman Dike that Easy is in need of winter clothing, ammo, and rations. Fed up with his administrative work, Winters decides to join Easy Company in Bastogne as the beleaguered men prepare for battle ahead. Once in Belgium, the soldiers learn that they are to prevent Germans from using "the crossroads" at Bastogne. As Easy members see other troopers retreating from an ambush, one jeepload of ammo is delivered by Lt. George C. Rice. Winters then watches with apprehension as his dispirited charges start their long trek into the woods.
