ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT {COVERAGE OF TERRORIST
ATTACKS} {TERRORIST ATTACKS} (TV)

Summary

This "ABC News Special Report" presents coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, as aired on ABC affiliate KABC-TV (Los Angeles). This coverage begins at 2:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, September 14, with the continuation of anchor Peter Jennings's interview with a panel of experts about the notion of rebuilding some of the buildings that collapsed or were seriously damaged in downtown New York City. The panel is made up of Jerry Hauer, former director of the Office of Emergency Management for New York City; Bruce Mosler, the president of U.S. Operations for Cushman & Wakefield; Bank of America chief executive officer Ken Lewis; and Joseph Rose, director of the New York Department of City Planning. Jennings speaks at length with Lewis about the vast quantity of paper that has been flying around the site since the attacks; the anchor asks whether the firms located in the twin towers have lost all of their records. Lewis explains that he is fairly sure that the companies had almost everything backed up as in some industries backup records are required by law. Jennings then cuts to live footage of President George W. Bush's emergence from the Marine One helicopter at Andrews Air Force Base; the president immediately boards Air Force One to fly to New York City. Pierre Thomas interrupts with breaking news about a pair of travelers detained by the FBI on a flight that was to have taken off from Los Angeles en route to Dulles Airport. Thomas also announces that the Justice Department has released nineteen names of suspected hijackers in the September 11 attacks, adding that seven of those suspects were pilots and eleven of them were from Florida. After Thomas's report, Jennings runs Jackie Judd's segment about new safety precautions in air travel. He then cuts live to Colin Powell at the State Department for a briefing in which the secretary of state lists the countries that have pledged their support to the United States. Powell confirms that Pakistan has not promised to help the U.S. at present. After Powell's briefing, Jennings discusses the secretary of state's statements with George Stephanopoulos, who mentions that he finds it notable that Powell seems to be resisting naming Osama bin Laden as the person behind the attacks. Jennings then cuts to another press conference, this one from Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Mueller. The two acknowledge that the FBI is investigating the names on the list of travelers from September 11, and they say that they are unable to confirm whether the black box from the flight that crashed into the Pentagon has been recovered. Next, John Miller briefly clarifies the difference between an "arrest" and a "detention." The tape concludes with Dan Harris's report on the efforts of residents of buildings in the shadow of the World Trade Center to return home.
