Thomas also announces that the Justice Department has released nineteen names of suspected hijackers in the September 11 attacks, adding that seven of those suspects were pilots and eleven of them were from Florida. After Thomas's report, Jennings runs Jackie Judd's segment about new safety precautions in air travel. He then cuts live to Colin Powell at the State Department for a briefing in which the secretary of state lists the countries that have pledged their support to the United States. Powell confirms that Pakistan has not promised to help the U.S. at present. After Powell's briefing, Jennings discusses the secretary of state's statements with George Stephanopoulos, who mentions that he finds it notable that Powell seems to be resisting naming Osama bin Laden as the person behind the attacks. Jennings then cuts to another press conference, this one from Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Mueller. The two acknowledge that the FBI is investigating the names on the list of travelers from September 11, and they say that they are unable to confirm whether the black box from the flight that crashed into the Pentagon has been recovered. Next, John Miller briefly clarifies the difference between an "arrest" and a "detention." The tape concludes with Dan Harris's report on the efforts of residents of buildings in the shadow of the World Trade Center to return home.
