SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {TOBEY MAGUIRE, SISQO} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. This episode, which is hosted by actor Tobey Maguire and features musical guest Sisqo, opens with a parody of Maguire's recent film, "The Cider House Rules." An audience member disrupts Maguire's monologue by shouting out phrases that seem to be non sequiturs -- until he explains that he is shouting lines from the movie "Jerry Maguire" in honor of the host. Maguire explains to the man that he was not in that picture, and the two begin a back-and-forth critical chronology of Maguire's career to date. In the next sketch, a parody of an episode of the game show "Celebrity Jeopardy," actors Sean Connery, Keanu Reeves, and Hilary Swank are portrayed as so stupid that they are unable to answer even the simplest of questions. A cartoon by Robert Smigel is then screened, in which the voice of Sharon Stone is dubbed into a racy animated short about Pinocchio. In the next skit, the program "Inside the Actors Studio" is parodied, with host James Lipton fawning over clownish actor Dustin Diamond. During the "Weekend Update" segment of the program, anchor Colin Quinn tells jokes about the Elian Gonzales case in Florida and the nepotistic presidential campaign of George W. Bush. Molly Shannon appears as actress Angelina Jolie, making fun of the actress's declaration at the Oscars a week earlier that she was "in love with her brother." Next, rhythm-and-blues singer Sisqo performs his novelty hit "Thong Song." The next skit concerns the X-rated exploits of a particularly limber student in a yoga class. A short film by Adam McKay is screened next, featuring Steve Buscemi and Horatio Sanz as owners of a food pawn shop. The episode closes with an ersatz commercial for a vague, faceless corporation that concludes with its slogan: "Even we don't know what we do."
