ABC PREMIERE EVENT: ANNE FRANK: THE WHOLE STORY {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Part one in this two-part miniseries, based on Melissa Muller's biography of Holocaust victim Anne Frank, that goes beyond the girl's world-famous diary to discuss her entire life. The program begins with Michael Eisner, president of the Walt Disney Company, introducing the film. The production starts with Anne speaking of her dreams and aspirations to "do everything." In Amsterdam, Holland, in February of 1939, Anne talks after school with her friends Hannah Goslar and Sanne Ledermann. Later, Anne goes to her father Otto's store, saying hello to worker Miep on the way. Then, Anne's grandmother arrives in town, giving her a fountain pen as a gift. Anne and her sister Margot's mother, Edith, reveals that their grandmother will be living with them now. Then, the Franks go to the house of Hans and Ruth Goslar to observe the Sabbath. During dinner, Otto and the other adults discuss the increasingly frightening influence of Adolf Hitler in Germany. That evening, Otto tells Anne a story as she lies in bed about good Paula and bad Paula, later discussing the nature of good versus evil. By June of that year, the Franks are on holiday at the beach, still concerned about Hitler, though their friend, dentist Fritz Pfeffer, downplays any danger. Later, at a party, Hans mocks Hitler. Meanwhile, Anne asks her father what will happen after watching a newsreel of Germany invading Poland while at the movies. Soon, the Germans have dropped leaflets over Amsterdam, telling its citizens to surrender lest the country be invaded. One night, while the Franks dine with Hermann and Auguste van Pels, Otto discusses why he refuses to send the children to stay with his sister in London. By May 15, 1940, the German influence has taken over Holland and signs now forbid the Jews from entering certain establishments. By January of 1941, a Jewish Registration Office has been set up and Anne and the country's other Jews are forced to be photographed, fingerprinted, and registered. Later, Anne, Hannah, and Hannah's young sister Gabi are approached by their friend Lucie, now dressed in allegiance to the Germans, though Lucie's mother quickly ends the conversation. Meanwhile, Otto tries to make his business a "purely Aryan enterprise" on paper in order that the Nazis don't close his shop down. He signs the business over to Jan Gies, Johannes Kleiman and Victor Kugler. Anne speaks with Miep, wondering what the Jews did to deserve Hitler's scorn. The kind Miep explains that the Jews have done nothing wrong. Later, Jan asks Miep to marry him and the ceremony is held soon thereafter. At the reception, Anne tells Miep about her dream of finding a husband as good as Jan. By October of 1941, Anne is forced to attend a Jewish Lyceum where she quickly befriends the half-Jewish Jacque van Maarsen. Anne begins stuffing her bra and trying to look more attractive, more womanly, in order to catch the eyes of boys. She reveals to Jacque that she still has yet to kiss a boy. In school, Anne begins to display great writing prowess when she has to present a short story. Meanwhile, Otto's partners, Johannes and Victor, convince him to buy the building and attic behind his store, ostensibly as a means for expansion. Now the Jews are being forced by the Germans to wear a gold Star of David on their clothing. Later, Anne shows Jacque a "smashing" diary she has asked her father to give her for her thirteenth birthday. Then, Anne runs into Helmut "Hello" Silberberg and is quickly smitten. By now, the Germans have emptied the provinces of Jews and deported them to Amsterdam. Otto tells Miep of his fears for the Jews being sent to labor camps. Otto says to Miep that it is time for the Franks and the van Pels to go into hiding. He explains to Miep that they will hide in the annex of the building. Miep agrees to help, learning that Anne and Margot still don't know the plan. Then, on Anne's thirteenth birthday, she receives her coveted diary. At her party, she also gets some ruby red shoes, then flowers from Hello. At her party, Anne tells her girlfriends that one of the guests, the van Pels' son Peter, is "a dope." On Sunday, July 5, 1942, Hello tells Anne that his grandparents think Anne is too young for him, leaving her troubled. Later, a German officer comes by the apartment with a letter summoning Margot to report to a "transit camp." With no other choice, Otto begins to implement his plan earlier than expected. Anne is upset, realizing that her life is about to be turned upside down. She is devastated to depart without saying goodbye to her friends, then having to leave the family cat behind. Ultimately, Miep helps the Franks move into the attic, overseeing as a bookcase is utilized to hide the doorway. Four months later, in November 1942, Anne begins writing letters to Jacque within her diary, describing life in their secret hiding place. On July 13, the van Pelses move into the secret annex, too. Peter brings his cat, despite Otto's orders to the contrary. Anne finds Peter "quite boring." Miep continues bringing supplies to the group and offering news. Otto and the others also allow Fritz to live with them. Upon his arrival, Anne gives him a run-down of the house rules and ways of life. At dinner that evening, Anne tells everyone how fortunate they are, but Auguste finds that a "ridiculous thing to say." Later that night, Edith is upset by how much noise the van Pels make, wishing the Goslars had moved into the annex instead. She bemoans the recent death of Ruth in childbirth. Meanwhile, as everyone sleeps, Anne get her first period and cries to herself in the bathroom. Soon, Anne reveals to Margot that she now feels like a woman. In January of 1943, the Jewish school has been greatly thinned of its students. Anne's girlfriends ponder what happened to her. Meanwhile, Miep gives a letter from Fritz to his fiancŽe, Charlotte, though stating that she doesn't know where he is. Back in the attic, everyone's nerves begin to fray. The Franks and van Pels listen to radio broadcasts of Winston Churchill, with Auguste not liking his plans. Edith wonders why America is taking so long to react. Meanwhile, Anne and Fritz begin bickering about the use of her desk. One night, bombings occur overhead, scaring everyone but Otto, an ex-soldier. The next day, Johannes and Victor hire William van Maaren as a new foreman, replacing the ailing father of co-worker "Bep." Miep gives William a tour of the shop, revealing later to the Franks that she thinks the man is a thief. One night, after Anne lashes out at her mother, Anne and Otto discuss their relationships to Edith. Later, Anne wakes up from a nap to see Peter at her bedside and they start to bond. One day, William begins questioning Victor as to what is in the annex, thinking he saw activity behind one of the darkened windows. He voices his suspicions to colleague Lammert Hartog. One night, Hannah, Hans and Gabi are finally taken away to a labor camp. Meanwhile, Fritz continues antagonizing Anne and Peter, especially as the two's flirtation grows. One night, Hermann goes to the storeroom to get bread and drops his wallet. William finds it the next day and takes out the money and papers, then returns it to Victor. Falling into William's trap, Victor claims that it is his wallet, which he dropped there earlier. William then asks Victor about Otto, and questions what happened to him. When Victor responds that there's no bounty to claim, William laughs and says that he's already got his "reward." Includes commercials and the first minute of the program which follows, "Eyewitness News."
