60 MINUTES {WAITING TO GO HOME, BECKY'S STORY, KUWAIT UPDATE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, "Waiting to Go Home," Steve Kroft visits the temporary home of the Kuwaiti government in Taif, Saudi Arabia, where officials have been holed up at the Sheraton Al Hada since their exile by Saddam Hussein. The government has completely set up operations in the hotel, and everything appears to be running smoothly. Kroft quizzes several of the officials about the similarities between Kuwait's financial dealings and those of a major business model. "You run Kuwait like a corporation," Kroft states. "So does the U.S.A.," one of the ministers responds. Kroft pauses and then exclaims, "But your corporation runs in the black!" Kroft asks the men how they feel about suggestions that the United States is helping them in their cause only because of the American interest in preserving access to oil. One of the officials responds that, if that is in fact the case, they don't want the help. In the second segment, "Becky's Story," Morely Safer examines the story of seventeen-year-old Becky Bell, who died from an illegal abortion she sought out after learning of the very strict parental-consent laws in her home state, Indiana. Safer finds that the young woman has become an icon for the pro-choice movement; its representatives feel that the consent laws are "predicated on the perfect situation-comedy idea of the American family," as one protester puts it. Safer also talks with members of a few pro-life groups, who have come under fire for attacking Becky's character in the aftermath of her death. Next, Andy Rooney explains his conclusion that people who say they want peace are usually the same people who are addicted to watching coverage of the war in the Persian Gulf on television. The program concludes with a series of Kuwait updates from Dan Rather, Betsy Aaron, and David Martin, including a brief interview with George Crist. Includes commercials and promos.

Cataloging of this program has been made possible by the Bell Atlantic Foundation, 2000.
