Summary
Part three in this six-part documentary series that takes an in-depth look at the Holocaust. This episode, "Ghetto," uses never before seen footage, still photos, and candid testimonials from both survivors and perpetrators of war crimes to explore life and death in the Warsaw ghetto during the war. The opening of the episode contrasts footage shot illegally of the squalid conditions in the ghetto with footage included in Joseph Goebels's propaganda films. Further discussion of Hitler's propaganda machine includes a look at the work of Fritz Hippler, who oversaw the production of "The Eternal Jew," perhaps the most famous of the propaganda films. "The Eternal Jew" uses the visual analogy of rats to describe the Jewish people. The next section of the episode concentrates on Hans Frank, the German who forced himself in as the Governor of Poland and earned himself the moniker "The Butcher of Poland" for the brutality he imposed on the Jews in the ghetto. An extensive interview with Frank's son Niklas follows, in which Niklas Frank calls his father a "wretched criminal" and a "maniac." The film then looks at the typhoid epidemic that broke out because of the unsanitary conditions in the ghetto. The sudden development of the disease caused the Nazis to speed up their mass executions; ghetto Jews were shipped to Treblinka -- known in ghetto circles as the "Treblinka Murder Factory" -- where they walked straight off of the trains into the gas chambers. "It was worse there than in Auschwitz," one survivor recalls.
