60 MINUTES {PARRICIDE, TO CATCH A THIEF, RICHARD THE LIONHEARTED} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. In the first segment, titled "Parricide," reporter Mike Wallace explores the issue of children who have killed their parents because of sustained abuse. He interviews a teenager who was not convicted of killing her father and a man serving out a sentence for murdering both his parents. He also speaks to Paul Mones, a lawyer and author who defends children accused of parricide. Wallace reports that a new Texas law allows evidence of abuse to be used to support the accused children. He further notes that more states are following suit. Reporter Morley Safer reports on a robbery at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in the second segment, titled "To Catch a Thief." After a brief explanation of the robbery, including a description of the stolen paintings -- Rembrandt's "Storm on the Sea of Galilee" and Vermeer's "The Concert" -- he explains that Brian McDevitt, a self-described former art thief, is an investigated suspect. Safer interviews McDevitt, who was convicted of a similar attempt at the Hyde Museum in New York. With no evidence to prove that McDevitt was the culprit, however, Safer can only designate him a convincing con artist. In the third segment, "Richard the Lionhearted," reporter Steve Kroft interviews Richard Branson, a British eccentric and multimillionaire. Kroft traces Branson's unusual rise to success, including his early departure from high school to start a magazine and his lack of an office. Branson, founder of Virgin records and Virgin/Atlantic airlines, explains that he loves new and challenging ventures. Commentator Andy Rooney next discusses cemeteries, and Lesley Stahl reads viewer mail and a statement by Mia Farrow. Commercials deleted.
