STRANGERS WITH CANDY: THEY ALL WANT CAKE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series that follows the exploits of Jerri Blank, a forty-six-year-old high-school freshman and self-described former "user, boozer, and loser." In this episode, Jerri fears that her social life is going to take a nose dive; a visit to the dentist has revealed that her molars are "made of tartar" and she needs braces. Jerri becomes even more frustrated with her life when Principal Blackman asks her to help verify his suspicion that Jerri's locker mate may be mentally retarded. Jerri isn't sure that she wants to snitch on the one person who has been consistently nice to her since the installation of her orthodontia, but she is curious about Blackman's theory. Jerri asks her locker mate a series of questions meant to determine whether or not she is retarded, but Jerri only ends up more confused. She goes to see Mr. Jellineck, who brings her to the library and helps her research the topic, producing an audio book titled "Retardation: A Celebration," narrated by Wilford Brimley. The book aims to dispel several myths about the retarded -- they don't rule the night, and they don't have the strength of apes, for example -- and it concludes by assuring listeners that the retarded "all want cake" and that "they're people, just like you and me." Jerri decides that she couldn't possibly turn her friend in. When she gives Blackman her decision, he tells Jerri that she will be forbidden from going on the school field trip to Good Time Island. The next time Jerri sees her locker mate, the locker mate is enjoying a large piece of cake, and Jerri is convinced that the girl is retarded without a doubt. Jerri figures she will be ostracized from the popular crowd even further if she doesn't go on the field trip so she buckles down and considers the big decision ahead of her. Commercials deleted.
