DIAL M FOR MUSIC {SERIES PREMIERE} {DAVE BRUBECK} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of music programs featuring performances by and interviews with various musical guests. The premiere episode, hosted by Billy Taylor, spotlights different forms of contemporary music, ranging from rock to jazz to electronic. The program begins with the Exiters performing "There They Go," followed by Carl Holmes and the Commanders singing "I Can't Help Myself." Taylor then talks to jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, questioning if jazz has become too intellectualized and commenting on rhythms in music from India and Africa. The Dave Brubeck Quartet performs "Take Five," and "Three to Get Ready." Professor Vladimir Ussachevsky of Columbia University explains how he writes electronic music, followed by the presentation of a composition he wrote specifically for the program. Finally, Alfredo Antonini and the CBS Symphony Orchestra play one of composer Charles Ives's avant-garde works, "Central Park in the Dark." (Though listed in the opening credits, the Rooftop Singers do not perform.)
