MICKEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL (TV)

Summary

This animated program -- originally released in 1983 -- is an adaptation of Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" featuring Disney characters "acting" in the classic roles. The program begins with Ebenezer Scrooge (Scrooge McDuck) walking to work on Christmas Eve day, talking about his dead former partner Jacob Marley (Goofy). Upon arriving at Scrooge and Marley counting house, he's angered to find his employee Bob Cratchit (Mickey Mouse) trying to put more coal on the fire. Cratchit asks for half of Christmas day off and Scrooge grants it, but docks him half a day's pay. Nephew Fred (Donald Duck) then enters, happy and wishing everyone a "Merry Christmas," further upsetting Scrooge. Scrooge then turns down Fred's invitation to Christmas dinner. Soon, two charity collectors (Ratty, Mole) come by looking for money for the poor, raising Scrooge's ire. Returning home after work, Scrooge sees Marley's face on his door knocker. He is frightened but dismisses it. However, while climbing the stairs, Scrooge is followed by Marley's ghost. The spirit tells how his bad behavior in life sentenced him to an eternity of carrying heavy chains. He warns Scrooge that the same thing will happen to him if he doesn't change. Next, the Ghost of Christmas Past (Jiminy Cricket) arrives, taking Scrooge to a long ago party at the Fezzywig Tea Co., the business of Scrooge's former employer, the kindly Fezzywig (Mr. Toad). There, Scrooge sees his younger, kinder self romancing the lovely Isabelle (Daisy Duck). Ten years later, Scrooge refuses to marry Isabelle, foreclosing on the mortage on her honeymoon cottage, more in love with gold than his precious fiancŽe. In the present, Scrooge regrets being so foolish. Next, Scrooge is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Present (Willie the Giant), who takes him to the Cratchit home, where the poor family has a meager dinner prepared by Cratchit's wife (Minnie Mouse). Scrooge is saddened to see the crippled Cratchit son Tiny Tim (Morty Fieldmouse), learning that he will die if events remain unchanged. Scrooge asks the ghost if things can indeed be altered. Next, Scrooge is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Future (Black Pete) who shows him his own grave and the hell that may be soon to come. Scrooge insists he will change, awakening on Christmas day as a new man. Scrooge skips through the streets and makes a donation to the two charity seekers, then agrees to have Christmas dinner with Fred. Later, Scrooge goes to Cratchit's house, where he plays a trick on Cratchit before giving him a raise and making him a partner. Tiny Tim then proclaims: "God bless us, every one!"
